A high-speed RegioJet passenger train has collided head-on with a freight train late Wednesday [5 June 2024] night in the city of Pardubice, some 100 kilometres east of Prague.

At least four people were killed and 23 others injured, officials said early Thursday. None of the injured was in life-threatening condition; both train drivers survived.

The crash took place late Wednesday night in the city of Pardubice, some 100 kilometers east of Prague, according to Interior Minister Vít Rakušan.

"high-speed" may be a mistranslation or misinterpretation of express/fast train (it was in fact a Regiojet night train). The freight train was moving at 30 km/h, the express at 80 km/h, according to a post on DSO, but I don't find that in the linked articles. Local speed in Pardubice is 100 km/h, line speed around it 160 km/h according to Openrailwaymap.

Looks the front bogie of a carriage has derailed, slewed across the other track and hit a metal containing wall/barrier. One of those barriers installed along high speed lines to push the sound up on embankments or running through built up areas.

Reporting 23 injured, 3 seriously as well as the three dead.

At least four people were killed when a passenger train collided head on with a freight train in the Czech city of Pardubice, according to rescue services.

"A head-on collision between a RegioJet train and a freight train claimed several lives and left dozens injured," Martin Netolicky, governor of the Pardubice region, said on Facebook.

Firefighters, paramedics and doctors, as well as at least one rescue helicopter, were deployed to the scene of the accident, some 100 kilometers east of the capital Prague.

The death toll included two Ukrainian women, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said, adding that the citizenship of the other two fatalities is being determined. Ukrainian Railways previously said that there were no fatalities or injuries in the railcars with passengers heading to Chop.

I travelled through this route on a CD sleeper the day before. Apparently, RegioJet are withdrawing this type of carriage due to it seemingly having the structural strength of Papier-mâché.

Structural weakness in these Bcmz coaches it seems. Failed in the same place in 2018 in Salzburg (https://mx-schroeder.medium.com/a-b...-main-station-shunting-collision-f7825025e9b8), that time not as badly, as that was a 15mph collision, as opposed to here being a 70mph collision.

I think it unlikely they will return to service, though I guess they could do some strengthening work (also unlikely). Certainly won't help the shortage of sleeper stock in Europe.

It wasn’t a 70mph collision at Pardubice. The RegioJet service had stopped before the collision - there is a video of the collision doing the rounds. It was a significantly higher energy collision than the Salzburg incident, though.

I think it unlikely they will return to service, though I guess they could do some strengthening work (also unlikely). Certainly won't help the shortage of sleeper stock in Europe.

RegioJet have said their vehicles from this batch have all been stopped and will not return to service.
