Cycle journey planner

Dunno if this is really the right place for it, but the guys who came up with a journey planner for the Cambridge Cycle Campaign have developed the idea to nationwide, and the site is now in open Beta, here. It works pretty well- though if you do have problems, please, please contact the developers with them- you'll help them make it better.

it has journey options for "Fastest", "Shortest" and "Quietest"- the latter will try to use side roads, off-road cyle paths etc at the expense of a perhaps more winding route.

If you live in Cambridge you see bikes in a different light...

Yes - we do need a nationwide cycle journey planner. If I'm going anywhere I usually take my bike on the train so I've got transport at the other end, and there's a lot of places (most places) it's really difficult to find out about sensible safe cycling routes in.

I wouldn't ask me then. But seriously, I agree with what youre saying and it's not just Cambridge!

unless you've got a tomtom or use the route regularly, they are v.handy. As it is, I've taken to following railway lines and/or major roads in their absence

Also, car journey planners are really rubbish for cyclists- after all, they don't have dedicated cycle routes, legal cycle shortcuts, short bits where you you can get off and push to save a long loop etc programmed in, but do oh so like motorways.

I agree that they are very useful. Bristol used to have a cycling & walking planner of its own but it has now been taken offline after a lack of updates. It's very useful to have a walking/cycling planner (I've been using Google Maps which has walking & driving directions).

Edit: I've just planned a route from my parents' house to Filton Abbey Wood station (a route I used to cycle and drive) and it's not taking me a route I'd recommend at all (through a park), selecting any of the three options. The fastest/shortest route option is also telling me to turn right onto a road where I know for a fact there is a 'No right turn' sign, and a raised central reservation stopping it, meaning anyone wanting to turn right would have to pull over to the left, dismount, attempt to cross a busy road (the A38), and carry their bike over the raised section.
