On Sunday I left a laptop on the 19:45 York to Liverpool Transpennine Express. I got off at Huddersfield and it wasn't until I got on the 20:37 Northern Rail Huddersfield to Manchester Piccadilly train that I realised I had lost the laptop. The guard on the Northern train did his best to contact TPE, but without success. However, he did more than I could have expected him to have done and I am grateful for his efforts.

On Monday I was at Huddersfield station early and explained my problem to Angela in Customer Services/Lost Property. She could not have been more helpful. She rang Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Piccadilly but there was no sign of my computer. She then discovered that the train had gone from Liverpool to the Ardwick train depot so she contacted the depot. A laptop had been handed in but it could not, at that stage, be confirmed that it was mine. During the whole of Monday Angela tried to get confirmation that the laptop that had been found was mine.

On Tuesday, when she came on shift she continued with her dogged determination to confirm the ownership of the laptop. When she eventually got confirmation that it was my laptop, she went out of her way to get it returned to me. There appeared to be problems with communication between Huddersfield and Ardwick, but as the customer I do not know the details of these problems. What I do know is that Shaz from Huddersfield was despatched by the Station Manager to retrieve my laptop, which was in my hands this evening.

Many people complain about customer services on the network, but I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who helped retrieve my laptop for me, not least the honest member of staff who found the laptop and handed it in, but mostly to Angela without whose efforts I would not have got it back.

Everyone that I came in contact with went above and beyond the call of duty and I would publicly like to extend my thanks to them. My especial thanks go to Angela who clearly knows what the word "service" in "Customer Service" means. If she is reading this thread, she can expect a bunch of flowers tomorrow as a small token of my appreciation of her efforts.

That's great to hear! I often take my laptop on TPE. There are TPE staff on here and I am sure they will be pleased to hear that you had a good experience. I am struggling to think of the last time I had a bad experience on TPE. I had one guard who really went out of his way to check connections for a group of us (he even checked the platform our onward train would be on, which was the same platform at the Airport).

Always good to hear stories like this, and I would echo Yorkie's sentiment of being unable to recall a bad experience with TPE!

Have you sent a letter to TPE to commend the staff that worked to get you your laptop back? You should if you haven't as I'm sure it would be appreciated by all involved on TPE's end.

Do Northern operate services from Huddersfield to Manchester Piccadilly?

Used to be Victoria when I used the line to go to Greenfield a few years back - has it changed or do they now operate services to both main Manchester stations?

As far as I'm aware Northern only go to Victoria from Huddersfield.

ainsworth74 I haven't written a letter to TPE yet, who do I address it to and what address?

bradders1983/142094. Most Northern trains go to Manchester Victoria, but the timetable shows that the Sunday services between 18 July and 5 September went to Piccadilly with a bus from Stalybridge to Ashton-u-Lyne and Manchester Victoria. My journey took place outside this period (last Sunday) but the destination board on the platform showed Piccadilly, as did the one on the train.

Normally Northern do run to Victoria, but have been diverted to Piccadilly during engineering works between Stalybridge and Victoria.

When I was on work experience with Northern last April/May, we had a couple who had left their laptop in the overhead racks on a 185 to the Airport. I forget who we had to contact, but anyway, it turned up (care of TM, I think) on the next train back! Great customer service I will agree!

Had much the same - my little sister (aged 11) left a bag of clothes and stuff on a XC unit going into Manchester. My mother realised as they were passing Guide Bridge and got hold of the guard. He was straight on the mobile and someone got hold of Cross Country. They rang my mother on her phone and said they would find it - they also gave her SWT's customer relations number at Bournemouth because thats where the particular unit was bound next.

Unfortunately SWT were extremely rude and put the phone down on my mother having had a rant about XC giving their number out despite it being their station at Bournemouth so not unreasonable a bag found on a train terminating there might end up with them.

However the XC train manager, not sure if this was exactly right as it was only relayed to me, apparently found the bag shortly after leaving Manchester, tried to hand it off to Virgin at Macclesfield to get it sent back, who refused to touch it, and so carried it all the way to Bournemouth and back to Manchester to be collected the next day on the way back through.

Excellent service all round from TPE and XC. SWT left a lot to be desired and a formal complaint was made about the member of staff involved there.

He meant that the laptop had been handed to the next service back, whether that was Northern or TPE.

No, but he said when he was doing experience with Northern and they had a couple who left their laptop on a 185. I was wondering why they dealt with it out of curiosity :? Why does the return service come into that?
