Curved Screen Televisions

Was round at a friends house last night watching the football.
He has a large curved screen television. To put it mildly the picture quality was awful. Unless you sat directly square on to the screen the screen brightness varied immensely. Bright at the outsides and much darker towards the centre.

Is this a common problem with all curved screen televisions? I’ve done a quick Google and it appears that most manufacturers no longer make them. Samsung have a couple in their range but that’s about it. When they came out some years ago they were touted as the future of television.

Note: I’m speaking here about curved screen televisions, not curved screen computer monitors.

There was a fad for concave curved screen TVs some years ago. It was obvious that you could only have any benefit if you sat at the centre of curvature, which judging by the look of them (I never used one) would be much closer than a normal viewing distance. But if you sat much further away the optimum curvature would need to be so slight that it would hardly be noticable, and the salesmen would have nothing much to brag about.

Correct; unless you have a private IMAX cinema, a curved screen isn't worth getting, full stop.
