Cumbrian Floods

Having watched the news today and seen the aftermath of the Cumbrian floods, one can only feel for the folk of the entire region.
I watched with particular interest the traffic problems created by the places cut off by falling bridges, people cut off and vunerable that are need of help.
The Government should respond by sending in the Army Royal Engineers who I do believe have tank based folding bridge layers as a temporary measure and also their skills and machinery that can be used speeding up reconstruction to try and get normality in this region as quick as possible for the people who are affected. Folding bridges incidently, were well used in WW2 replacing vital links destroyed in conflict.
Its a pity that the Army is currently used in dubious conflicts like Iraq and Afghanistan where I am sure our Army guys and girls would be much much happier to help our own people of Cumbria helping them back to normal and they WOULD be appreciated for their help and just the fact of being there as opposed to the contempt from the the people they are trying to repatriate and improve their standards of life thousands of miles away.

The Royal Engineers have already been sent in, to build a semi-temporary bridge which will be there for several months.

I'm happy to say that my part of Cumbria - the South - escaped with only local flooding, however just a few miles away, Grange-Over-Sands is badly affected, though fortunately it's only fields underwater.

The Army is no longer in Iraq, aside from a couple of training teams which number in the double digits I believe.

I'd be surprised if deployment of Royal Engineers and their bridging assets isn't being planned.

Thats certainly good news about The Royal Engineers. Lets hope that the worst is over.

Near me we had a temporary army bridge put up in the 80s and it was there until 2001

Langwathby in Cumbria lost it's road bridge over the River Eden in the 1968 floods. The temporary Bailey Bridge is still in place, 41 years later. Who knows how long the new bridge in Workington will remain in place?

It's a footbridge they're building so doesn't help the car folks. But as a supermarket says, "Every little helps"

It has. They used to be able to build them in one day.... Interestingly the army spokesperson on the news today said it would be a full size bridge but would be pedestrian only due to problems trying to secure vehicular access at (one) end of the bridge across private land.
