Cumbrian bus accident

Minor accident this morning, no idea who the operator is, except the bus, an Optare Solo, had a blue back.

Six children were hurt in a crash involving a bus and a HGV this morning.

The collision, at Grayrigg, near Kendal, happened at about 8.25am.

The bus driver, a 47-year-old man from Kendal, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Three adults have been taken to Lancaster Hospital for treatment for injuries, which are believed to be not life threatening. A fourth was airlifted to Preston hospital with non life-threateneing head, arm and neck injuries.

None of the 24 school children on the bus - 14 girls and 10 boys and all aged between 11 and 18 - were seriously hurt, say police. Six were taken to Lancaster hospital with "minor injuries."

The HGV driver, aged 44, was released from his cabin by emergency services and flown to Preston hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries.

All of the injured people have left the scene.

A North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust spokesman said five ambulances and the Hazardous Area Response Team were sent to the crash.

Other emergency services were also despatched.

The road will continue to remain closed with collision investigators examine the scene. Anyone who saw the crash should ring police on 101.

It was Kirkby Lonsdale Coach Hire's Optare Excel, Y268 DRC, on service 106.

Hardly a 'minor' accident with the HGV driver airlifted to hospital!

Given the state of the wagon, I'd bet the Excel gets written off.

There was a picture on the BBC News website report about the accident. Thankfully no fatalities.

The road was closed all day, it finally got re-opened at 6.50pm, over 10 hours after the accident. Having seen photo's of both vehicles, i would not be surprised if only the wagon is declared insurance write off. The damaged to the bus appears to be only the front window pillar (Drivers side).

Kirkby Lonsdale Coach Hire, now have a replacement for the Excel which was involved.
It another Excel from the same batch, the replacement one being Y251 DRC.

This one is coming from North Somerset Coaches as they are to unfortunately stop running bus services - including their main Bristol to Nailsea service which 251 was used on.

A Morecambe bus driver is to go on trial accused of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a crash involving schoolchildren near Kendal.

Anthony Waner, 44, of Acre Moss Lane, denied the charge when he appeared in court.

The prosecution follows a collision on September 23 on the A685 at Grayrigg when the bus driven by Waner was involved in a crash with a HGV.

Ten people were hurt, including six children who were on their way to school. They were treated at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

The lorry driver, a man from Kendal, was airlifted from the scene with serious head, neck and arm injuries.

Waner was bailed to appear before Carlisle Crown Court on April 21.
