Cumbria day ranger

Hello all, I was thinking of taking a day out in and around Cumbria...

According to validity map, I can use the day ranger to/from Preston where my journey will depart and end. Is this correct? And are staff aware of it- I don't want a similar ocurence of theat of another thread where a day ranger was questioned as a station wasn't in the named county (Think it was Liverpool on a Lancashire day ranger)


Also, where is best to visit for
A)Pub grub and general drinking
and
B)Things to do/see on the Cumbrian coast?

If it's on the validity map then yes the ticket is valid to and from Preston. Don't get too hung up about the ticket name - it's a similar situation to the Derbyshire Wayfarer ticket, which is valid to Sheffield and Burton, which aren't in Derbyshire.

Alternatively, have you considered the upcoming Northern Day Ranger offer? It's a very limited Northern service between Preston and Lancaster, but you could get a PRE-LAN SDR for £8.90 plus a Northern Day Ranger for £10 and go all the way up the Cumbrian Coast line for less than half the price of a Cumbria Day Ranger.

In terms of pubs, I'd recommend this one if you like real ale.

+1 for the Prince of Wales at Foxfield as the best pub on the route. Good food if they're doing it, it may be worth ringing the day before to check. Note they're closed Monday/Tuesday.

A few other stops on the Cumbria Coast:

Grange - may be a bit early in the journey if you're heading northbound, but v. pretty and has a top class pie shop. If the train times work and you fancy a leg stretch you can walk along the promenade and then railside paths to Kents Bank station. Arnside with good chippy and a walk up Arnside Knott is a good alternative.

Ulverston - charming Lakes market town with several pubs, independent shops + Laurel and Hardy museum. Walk up to 'the Hoad' (big lighthouse monument on the hill) is about 60-90 mins there and back from the station, great views.

Barrow - If you have to stop to change trains, head to the Duke of Edinburgh pub at the traffic lights outside the station. Good food and ale. If you want or need to make a longer stop, the Dock Museum (free) is excellent on Furness' industrial history

Ravenglass - 'Ratty railway' is an obvious attraction though requires time. Pretty but small village as well, though station pub is disappointing.

Whitehaven - An obvious midpoint stop up the coast,preferable to Workington. Head to the Harbour area which is nice with museum. St Bees is an alternative stop in that area if the day is nice, with good beach access.
