CSR Radio / NRN

Here on the Southern we have CSR (Cab Secure Radio) which is pretty good most of the time and means you don't have to jump down onto the ballast in the pouring rain to contact the signalman.

When we went onto that backward region - GWR (God where's Reading?) - we had to use NRN - which is .......... pathetic. Very poor for communications and most of the time you still have to get out of the cab to go to the STP (Signal Post Telephone).

Do you have CSR in your part of the country or is it NRN everywhere else too?

Of course - when they've finally finished testing GSM-R (The Global System for Mobile communications – Railways ) everyone should be on an equal footing and that old branch line from Paddington can catch up with the rest of us

What's GSM-R then? Only based on mobile phone technology.....

Drivers are permitted Mobiles but they must be switched off in the cab.

Control tried to get ***tty with me because I used mine during an outbreak of Swine Fever at Hinton Horrible.

My guard had no phone - I only had the CSR and I wanted to speak to someone direct without going through the Signalman.

So I used my mobile to 'Phone a Friend'. My friend wouldn't answer though and we had a 40 minute delay at 7.40am.

Hardly dangerous using a mobile on a train that's not going anywhere

Points on our licence (really!) and loss of licence and job.

I find the CSR very hit an miss out of Pad, 'radio lost' comes up just as 'speak' comes up!!!, so you end up having to use the cab mobile or if that is buggered which it sometimes is!, you use your not to be used personal mobile!!

All the new GSM arials are now up on our patch but has buggered the CSR area change at Acton for some strange reason!! so you have to manually change it!

I'll always use my 'not to be used mobile'.

What do they want you to do ........ sit there incommunicado?

Just looking at the Kestrel brochure - what a stunning looking loco. Pity it wasn't a standard design put into production.

Be nice to see it in some other colours

kris csr only goes as far north as rugby, and thats it as far as im aware, it was something to do with network saouth east area or something, drivers say csr is way better than nrn, we use nrn down the branch to bedford drivers dont even bother and go for the spt every time.

NRN is still in use on most Regional Lines in the North.

I'm sure that some things like CSR are compulsory for Driver Only Operation.
