Shrewsbury?
Prison used to be adjacent the station.

Just incidentally and non-cryptically: memory stirred re lines by A.E. Housman, misery-merchant par excellence with a particular "thing" about that part of the world --

They hang us now in Shrewsbury jail / The whistles blow forlorn / And trains all night groan on the rail / To men that die at morn.

No.

No.

That's the one. Left being port and slade prison being Fletcher's abode, so it's back to you.

Incidentally, for a bonus point and a free bowl of cold porridge, does anyone know the frontage of which prison was used in the opening sequence of the show?
That was the gatehouse of the old St Albans prison

Open floor.

Might be misread / mispronounced as advice to author Mary Webb: indulge yourself in the product of Rowntrees or Haribo, then get cracking on your Shropshire tear-jerker about deformed heroine.

It sure took a while, and I feel positively ashamed -- can we make it open floor, please?

My usual way of being unhelpful -- keep thinking of Swanbourne, but of course that closed in 1967...
