Cryptic clues = station name

OK.

Perhaps I should have said the first syllable of the answer station is pronounced as "Bryn", although not necessarily spelt that way.

The answer is not a National Rail station.

It might help if I rewrite the clue slightly

BR placed Ely in

a mess

which needs to be sorted out.

Cheam is indeed in the London Borough of Sutton, but before 1965 was part of Surrey.

i lived there from 1966 - 1981, and went to school in North Cheam and then Sutton.

The postal address is still Surrey which is where some of the confusion may lie.

The boundary with the Borough of Epsom and Ewell and Surrey proper is very close to the centre of Cheam.

Your clue sounds good to me. Could it possibly be Hatfield ?
