The only historical Stephen of any note I can come up with is King Stephen of White Ship and Civil War with his wife, Matilda, notoriety, back in the 1100s.

I don't doubt for one second that my list of Historical Stephens is exhaustive...

Going about my business this morning, I did get a fresh -- very probably wrong -- idea.

Saint Stephen is alleged to be the first Christian martyr; he was stoned to death. So -- Stone (Staffordshire)?? I know that the saint endured the thing, rather than did it; but clutching at straws would seem rather the current name of the game...
