Hamburgers are not made from ham -- but hey, this is Cryptic World; and -- "street food" and all that -- the stall on the street, where the chap prepares and cooks the burgers concerned...

I was slightly confused by Shrewsbury at first! I shall declare an OPEN FLOOR

Hint: this station began life with the name which is the answer; name was subsequently changed to a different one, which it bore for 114 years -- including an episode of a few years' closure followed by reopening. Ultimately, its original name -- i.e. the "answer name" -- was restored to it.

Absolutely correct. (The renaming as Magdalen Road is thought to have been largely to avoid confusion with Watlington in Oxfordshire, terminus of the GWR branch from Princes Risborough -- that line's passenger service withdrawn 1957, freight actually into Watlington withdrawn 1960.)

My original clue: fishing-boat skipper exclaiming -- surprised but delighted -- "What ! Ling ton?" (a ton caught, of the fish known as ling -- a species in the cod family).

I'm not the quizmaster; but per my understanding, in this game folk have stuck strictly to -- as expressed in the very first post -- "current UK [passenger] rail stations", of all-and-sundry UK rail undertakings. There must be thousands of closed stations in the UK: re the game, answers can often be difficult enough to get, when just sticking to open ones. Might there be any possibility of getting "a word from on high", concerning this point?
