Apparently no fans here, of Patrick O'Brian's novels about the Royal Navy in the Napoleonic Wars ! The first two syllables of the station name concerned; make up the slang word widely current 200-odd years ago, used by ordinary working chaps to address pretty well any male of their own approximate status: equivalent for those times, of today's "mate".
