Bit of assistance, anyone? Narrowing (not gauge-wise) the field down: station falls in the preserved / heritage category of lines. A preserved set-up in England runs regular, though not very frequent, workings involving this station.

Sounds a potentially fascinating place; but, no. (Duh ! penny has just dropped, re your wordplay here.) This station is on what was a hundred -- likewise ninety -- years ago, the mini-system with which my posting name is closely associated.

After the hint that follows, I'm thinking I'll be out of hints !

Location: Peak District. The station is on a stretch of line which is "in association with" and physically linked to, a bog-standard preserved railway. The b-s.p.r. operates return workings open to the public, a couple of times a month in the season, to the "clue" station.

Ravenstor?

No. The outfit concerned is very much (in my opinion) in the Peak District part of the world, though outside the designated National Park. It's not the Ecclesbourne Valley, or Peak Rail -- that leaves...?

Butterley Park?

No: ingenious answers, but none yet featuring the relevant preserved / heritage line !

That appears to rule out The Midland Railway...

...and that rules out Ecclesbourne Valley and Peak Rail which doesn't seem to leave anything else.

Apologies if I'm geographically wrong -- sincere mistake, if so -- but: stuff radiating from Leek Brook Junction...

From my point of view, I am keen that someone gets the answer soon as I'm really interested as to why it is so difficult to determine. Having now spent too much time researching preserved railways of the peak district area, I think I may be of use now to the local pub quiz team if this subject comes up :)

I think at this stage, if I was Calthrop, I may be wondering why no-one has got the blindingly obvious station?

If we are talking about the Churnet Valley Railway, the clues "..and physically linked to..", and "..The b-s.p.r. operates return workings.." certainly make no sense to me.

Why the British Society for Proteome Research would be running services in the area is definitely an oddity ;)

The only station in the locality closely linked by rail is Blythe Bridge, but that is to the Foxfield Light Railway.
So does "...physically linked..." mean by bridge, road, canal, river, fields, disused trackbed, telephone line?

That's without even considering the cryptic clue which ought to shed light but doesn't, not for me anyway.

We are talking about the Churnet Valley Railway. "b-s.p.r." refers back to my just-previously-mentioned "bog-standard preserved railway" -- see above. "Physically linked" denotes just that -- by rail -- simplest meaning.

Hopefully, referring to the Churnet Valley's website --

https://www.churnet-valley-railway.co.uk/

will be enlightening as to "what I'm on about".

That's without even considering the cryptic clue which ought to shed light but doesn't, not for me anyway.

I've been feeling very proud of my cryptic clue; but wonder whether it's altogether too abstruse, not in a good way.

Is it maybe time for me to "tell all"?
