No, sorry I think I've got it. Dulwich?Or the nearest station to that ground? Which google maps tells me is...East Dulwich.

Gotta be, surely?

"Gotta be," madam? Nay, it is not; I know not "gotta be."

Nothing to do with cigars and I've no idea how you came up with East Dulwich.

I thought I'd given it away in post #4440 but it seems not so here's another hint:

2/3 of the answer is in the clue

If this isn't solved by 18:43 today I will reveal all and pass the baton.

Dulwich Hamlet are a well known London non league side. East Dulwich is the nearest station to their ground. (Ironically the second nearest is Denmark Hill)

No: it is "Celtic fringe", though.

Anybody for a clue? The penultimate word alludes to the last ever large-scale episode on the part of a public rail undertaking in the UK, of the "non-entertainment" use of steam locos: the location whose name is the answer, played a key role in this operation.

I get the impression that with this entry, I have somehow committed a faux pas. I would therefore ask: please can this whole Heard locally... clue / question be "killed", and "open floor" declared? And I'll take a break from this "Cryptic clues" thread.

It is not a faux pas to set a difficult clue however it is customary to provide hints when it is clear that nobody can solve it. It is my opinion that those hints should get progressively closer to a "giveaway" so that eventually someone gets the answer. In this case if you are giving up please give us the answer and an explanation but don't give up on the "Cryptic clues" thread altogether.

As it's open floor here's quickie:

In franchise renewal negotiations some TOCs are backtracking.
