I did see the revised clue, and I should have stated:
both ends of what & has in a noble gas (Neon) = Neston

It's too late for me to pretend that Neston was always the answer I had in mind, even though it does fit perfectly with both clues.

So here's rewrite number II...

What edges into noble gas?

Edge Hill

The answer must feature in an REM song, and "Edge Hill" doesn't.

Took you long enough! It was rewrite II that gave it away, wasn't it?

Newton
got beaned by the apple good yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

The front end of 'what' is 'w'

The back end of 'what' is 't'

Jam them both into 'neon' to get the answer.

Yes, I realise that that's not what 'end' usually means in cryptic clues, but er, LOOK OVER THERE!!!

Crookston, Shepherdswell and Hook all wrong. Dale is on the right lines though by thinking of another word for one of the ones in the clue.
