You'll get the idea if you keep following this thread, it's taken me over 40 years of doing cryptic crosswords.
Not that, perhaps I've been a bit too obscure with this one so here's a hint:
Note the use of "unusual" rather than "unusually"
Another clue will follow this evening if hasn't been solved.
I promised another hint so perhaps the sign could have read:

I'm still floundering with this, but it occurs to me that WEY would be a homophone for 'street', so it could be Weeley.

That's ingenious (and your "floundering" pun was appreciated) but incorrect, however your answer does contain an older form of part of the solution.
