That was the first assumption. I got nowhere because the only D is the last letter of 'changed' and I can't see how that helps especially as 'changed' looks like an anagram indicator for 'chinese leaf'. 'He first' could be H, but that doesn't seem to lead anywhere.

I assumed Roman numerals too and thought "First he" might be Adam (also thought of winner or gold) but that doesn't get me anywhere either.

The clue is inconsistent since it first deals with removing a letter from the answer then indicating that 'chinese leaf' is an anagram. The D must be added to the letters of 'chinese leaf' to form the answer or the D removed and then the remainder changed into 'chinese leaf' but the clue switches from method one to the other.
