That was the first assumption. I got nowhere because the only D is the last letter of 'changed' and I can't see how that helps especially as 'changed' looks like an anagram indicator for 'chinese leaf'. 'He first' could be H, but that doesn't seem to lead anywhere.
Since the two acknowledged cryptic experts have had a shot and to avoid stalling this thread, here's another hint, then I'll call it quits if this doesn't help.
You're on the right track with D and the anagram.
