This isn't necessary for the riddle, but it might make it easier.

Well, I'm afraid Bury St Edmunds is incorrect - though 99% sure you've realised this.

Clue: look at sentence structure. What could the different bits mean? Divide the sentences up, and think about them. Are there any indicators there to help you? There's an obvious indicator for something there, but can anything else there mean anything?

Let's take a look at the original clue:

The 'well, is this murder?' bit refers to the phrase, 'meat is murder'. The meat in question is ham, which features in the answer.

Now, let's look at the words 'secondly' and 'fourth'. Here's that sentence again.

Because, secondly, the mixed ringing of the fourth version of the alarm at good old Thorne makes me badly retch.

For 'secondly', count two words in after the word 'secondly' and you hit the word 'mixed'. This shows that the answer contains an anagram.

Now, count four words in ('fourth') from 'mixed', and you hit 'fourth'. Count in another four words, and you hit 'alarm'. Count in another four words, and you find Thorne. Finally, count in four more words, and you find 'retch'.

'Mixed' shows us that there's an anagram. 'Rotherham' is an anagram of 'alarm Thorne retch'. Unfortunately there's nothing there for the Central bit, but I think that works OK.

The River Rother can be found north of Hastings, BTW.
