Croydon tram request stops?

I've heard announcements on the trams about having to push the Stop button at the stop you want to get off. But the driver always stops at all the stops anyway so whats the point?

Not always - some don''t at quieter stops at quieter times of day when there's nobody waiting to get on. (maybe particularly if running a bit late.)

All the trams i've ever been on have stopped at all stops regardless of whether or not a person has been waiting at the stop, or pressed the stop button.

I have known Tramlink to not stop if no-one wishes to get on or off - they have to stop at some stops anyway (due to single lines on certain stretches) so will release the doors anyway whilst waiting

Odd Tramlink thing last night. At every stop the doors opened automagically even if nobody pressed the button (I was stood by the doors). At Wimbledon I didn't press the button as I thought they would open, but they didn't open until I pressed the button.

The driver has two options 'Open doors' and 'release doors' (which then only open if a passenger presses the button on the doors). Different drivers use different options (and probably the same driver uses different options in different circumstances e.g. busy stop, cold day at empty stop etc.).
