Croydon to Winchester cheapest return option

I'm going to university reunion in Winchester and staying overnight. I am intending to pick up the XX.12 from CLJ sometime tomorrow late morning (after meeting friends), returning sometime Sunday. I am already covered from Zones 1-6. What is the best way to do this? Is it possible to buy an Open return from boundary 6 to Winchester?

A Super Off Peak Return from Boundary Zone 6 to/from Winchester is £25.00 but depending on the format of the OP's existing ticket, would the OP need to touch out / in at the zone 6 boundary or maybe face an incomplete journey maximum charge?

If it’s on Oyster and there’s a Travelcard loaded onto it, it won’t be a problem and they can continue their journey on a non-stop train without touching in/out at Surbiton.

With some National Rail ITSO smartcards that also have a PAYG element loaded on them (such as KeyGo on a Southern key smartcard), that might cause an issue? I’m not too sure on that one though.

Yes it's an Oyster but I have a weekly 1-6 travelcard on it. Presumably I should be able to buy the paper ticket from the window at SNR or PUO (if open)? Can you buy these types of 'extension' ticket from a machine?

Any ticket office should be able to sell them fine.

Alternatively, if my memory serves me correctly, Southern ticket machines can sell tickets from the Boundary of Zone 6 - there should be an option to the side if you select to buy a ticket from another station.

That said, the price of the same ticket from Surbiton (the last station in Zone 6, tickets routed "via Woking" specifically) rather than the Boundary Zone 6 is the same and there's no need for the train to stop at Surbiton, same as with the Boundary Zone 6 ticket, if that's easier to buy.

Some TVMs can sell Boundary Zone tickets but you can certainly buy them at any ticket office.

There is no requirement to tap out your Oyster during the journey as you have a season ticket. Also, the train doesn’t need to call at the boundary zone station.

SWR's regular TVMs (the Scheidt & Bachmann models) can sell Boundary Zone tickets. Select the option on the left-hand side of the screen for 'tickets from another station', then the Boundary zone tickets show on the right of the screen.

However, as Alex365Dash has said, just buying a ticket to start from Surbiton might be easier...

Southern Scheidt & Bachmann machines can also sell Boundary Zone tickets. Same procedure as outlined in the post above.
