Croydon to Dover Priory

I'm looking for a return from Croydon to Dover Priory for Sunday 10 April, but have not been able to find anything particularly cheap.

I need to travel out around 0930 and return about 1600. I can go from East or West Croydon. Another possible way could be Tramlink to Beckenham Junction. Anyone got any ideas?

I've had a look at the various options. I used to live in Dover and frequently travelled to East Croydon so am familiar with the routes.

The plain OPR is £33.50 without a railcard, not particularly appetising. If you have a Travelcard or other means to get to London Bridge then it drops to £29.50.

I did wonder if the fares DVP-ECR would be cheaper but they come out the same.

Therefore, the only way I can see to reduce the fare is to get a railcard.

OPR (Super Off-Peak Return)? I hope you mean CDR (Off-Peak Day Return). Sorry to be pedantic but it is used for other purposes and therefore causes confusion.

A CDR is available via Not London at £28.50 so if you are willing to go via Ashford-Tonbridge-Redhill then you can save a few bob.

There is engineering work between Ashford and Headcorn that day which complicates matters. I would not recommend via Redhill unless you want to be travelling all day.

4 changes and 3 hours 39 minutes each way though, according to OJPs. Line is closed between Tonbridge and Ashford that day. Alternative is bus between Tonbridge and Headcorn, this takes the journey close to 4 hours.

I can't find a Super Off Peak Return (OPR) for this flow?

The Off Peak Day Return (CDR) is priced as follows:
£28.50 Rte Not London
£33.50 Rte +Not HS1
£36.10 Rte +Any Permitted

It's actually cheaper to get a CDR from Barnham (£18.00) Rte Not London, this would possibly (you'd need to check the Routeing Guide) be valid Barnham - East Croydon - Penge West/East - Bromley South - Dover, and you could start 'short'. Check first though.

You might try a Southern Daysave (£10) to Ashford via Lewes/Hastings then a local ticket on. (£9.60 off peak day return)

However that is partly bustituted as well and takes even longer than normal

Thanks everyone - it's not looking very promising really I think, unless I want to spend all day travelling, or pay the normal fare. It's a reunion with an old friend, and doesn't have to be Dover, so maybe I'll have a rethink.

I'd forgotten about the Southern Daysave - that would have saved me money a few months back when I had to pay £19 for a day return East Croydon - Angmering!

Would it not be possible to travel up to St Pancras, then onto High Speed? May be quicker.
