I am currently applying for 2 train driver jobs. Crossrail and gtr. I have passed stage 1 with gtr and have got stage 2 tomorrow with gtr. Crossrail have invited me to do assessments but they are after my gtr ones.

I have today recieved an email from Crossrail saying that basically they don't want me to continue with gtr if I'm also going forward with their application.

Surely it's okay for me to continue with both?

What are your opinions on this this? How should I proceed?

That does sound very strange. It's pretty common to apply for a trainee job with multiple TOCs, and as long as you pass tests there isn't a reason not to. Obviously if you failed the tests with GTR you couldn't then resit them for cross rail for 6months so they would probably cancel your application anyway.

But saying that they most likely have far more applicants than they need so can be as picky as they like.

Not sure how the email was worded to you but do you think tht if you ignored it they would chase it up?

I would continue with both applications how will they know if you continue with gtr one thing I'd do is delete this thread as I imagine people in their organisation know about this forum and it won't be hard to work out who you are

would it not be in your best interests to continue with both? Seems unfair that they ask you not to pursue one company, then they dismiss your application (potentially) themselves later on. If nothing else, they know for sure, that you would like the job role, however your suitability is the only thing, in question so far.

Good luck with both applications.

The last bit is good advice, only thing I'd watch with the first bit is that if he takes the tests with GTR crossrail will know as they obviously check the database to ensure you havnt failed/sat them in the past.

Obviously they can't easily check if you have sat interviews.

I want to pass the stage 2 with gtr so that I have two ****s at the line manager one
interview. But by the sounds of it if I go tomorrow then Crossrail will stop my application.

Two what's at the line manager?!

Many a seasoned driver would love to try that at their manager...

i think you have tried to be a bit too clever here. I can understand why Crossrail don't want you going through the application process with two TOCs at the same time. You really need to decide which TOC you want to continue with and hope you get through. Can't image if you pass the assessments with GTR but then fail the DM interview that Crossrail are going to be happy to continue your application after what they have told you.

Can't agree with you on that one. It's nothing to do with any company how many other companies you apply to work for. If you need a job you don't put all your eggs in one basket. It's very common to apply for trainee driver jobs and similar with multiple TOCs. I had 3 applications for trainee driver jobs at 3 TOCs when I started driving. I only went with the one I went for as they were the first to reply to me and offer me a job.

How did they find out ?

Sorry to be blunt but as Crossrail has specifically asked you not to continue with GTR then you have a simple choice. Continue and have Crossrail reject your application or respect your prospective employer and make a decision on who you wish to work for.

If Crossrail discovered you continued with GTR and did indeed reject your application then you only have yourself to blame.

What are you planning to say in the interview ? Is becoming a Train Driver more important than the company you work for ? Will you tell Crossrail or GTR they were second choice and you are keeping your options open ?

Where do you live ? What depot is closest ? Remuneration ? What style of Driver do you wish to become ?

they emailed me the day after i passed the 1st stage with gtr saying that i should let them know how i get on with stage 2 so they can see if my scores are good enough for them. now they are giving me an ultimatum.

im not planning on telling either company about the other if i get to DM interviews. I shouldnt have to. If I pass the selection process then I should get a job offer regardless of whether I have applied elsewhere, i dont see why that should matter.

I agree, while i cant speak for applying to be a train driver, it is the same as applying to a graduate scheme for any company in any industry.

They're all fully aware that each candidate will be applying to various different schemes and hence the reason why some pay so well and offer good benefits such as cars and so on so they attract the best candidates.

No you shouldn't have to. BUT; and this is a big but. (and I cannot lie...) They are well within their right to reject your application. Consider the company's perspective. How do you think the company is going to feel when they find out that even before you get the job you are already dismissing them out of hand ? Respect goes a long way.

Also during the interview process there is a long list of questions to be answered. I'm not sure you can answer them honestly when you are applying for both companies.

You might not care about who you work for. I assure you that the company cares who work for them.

Becoming a Driver is important to you but your still at the whim's of the TOC's They are employing you, not the other way around.

IF you choose to go forward with both then Crossrail then reject you who's fault is it ? Its not a hard choice to be honest. The choices you will have to make once driving are much harder. That is also going to affect your application.

I also agree but it is also perfectly acceptable for companies to reject applicants. Also, there is a finite number of TOC's and even less when you consider location.

I know where you are coming from and don't disagree with your points, BUT, I can't see how a company can almost blackmail you like this. What difference does it make to them how many companies you apply for? Unless cross rail are promising you employment it's very unfair to restrict your application to them. If you cancel your GTR application on XR request and then don't get the XR job you loose out.

As I said before, few people put all their eggs in one basket when applying for jobs. Common sense and general accepted practice is that if you require a job you apply for several so you have something to fall back on track f you don't get the one you actually want.

Dismissing them out of hand! A bit dramatic wouldn't you say?

It's not a case of not caring who you work for - you have the choice of, at best, a few TOCs who are within distance and recruiting. They have the choice of hundreds of candidates so it's logical to increase your chance of getting a job you're going to apply for as many as possible. It's unrealistic to think everyone applying for Crossrail is doing so to fulfil some long held ambition and passion for Crossrail and no other company could be considered.

It does seem unfair. Are they going to stop seeing all other candidates until they have considered your application?

Out of principle I wouldn't even entertain Crossrail, who are they to dictate what you can apply for? You could only continue with them but get rejected at the final hurdle, then what happens....?

Crossrail are one of the TOC that require a higher pass in assessments then again so does GTR (ffor stage 1)

I think good luck to you my friend I got through part of the first assessment with GTR but failed the DFFT section of the test. I have put in multiple trainee driver applications at several TOCs and don't see any problem with that I was also rejected by MTR Crossrail within two days of applying so congratulations for getting as far as you have with both of then. If anything crossrail should be happy with you doing the assessments with GTR as they save on the cost. Which ever you choose will ultimately be determined by you and what suits your lifestyle and expectation but good luck an hope all goes well whatever happens.

Did you go ahead and sit the 2nd assessment ?

If they were expecting you to cancel the 2nd assessment after already confirming that you are attending then what they are asking you to do is prove yourself to be unreliable.
If it was me I'd have still attended on that basis, of committing to being there before their email and not wanting to be unreliable, should I need to apply once more with that company in the future I'd be wasting my time and for what, not like the other company is making any kind of offer, just the opportunity to progress in the application process.
If they are like this when applying then what are they like to work for ?

My thoughts, in the summer i start a new job, not in the rail industry, and the welcoming tone that i already feel from my new employer towards me and the others in my intake makes me even more excited to start and work hard for them.

So reject GTR, and then be unsuccessful for crossrail, where he may have been successful with GTR. Doesn't seem fair him then losing chance at both.

No it doesn't and I haven't said it is. What I have said is that Crossrail have set a caveat and that is their prerogative. Deciding to go against that puts Crossrail at risk. It's a catch 22. Either way you blow one of the chances.

Everyone else seems to be suggesting to totally ignore Crossrail's restriction and apply for both. Personally I don't see that as sound advice. Effectively you are risking rejection from Crossrail.

Why not phone Crossrail and ask why ?

But by doing it the other way he is automatically rejecting GTR. What's the difference, except potentially calling crossrails bluff.
Either way he will be left with one or the other unless crossrail are bluffing. Crossrail bluffing will be the only way he will be left with applications at both operators. Might as well keep both applications and test crossrail are bluffing unless he desperately wants crossrail over GTR.

GTR=More variety of traction, better routes, more annual leave (by three days), voluntary Sundays, voluntary Boxing Day (no service GN, very little TL. Crossrail though, will run a full service and you'll have to work it unless you are a rest day or put your name in a hat with everyone else for annual leave).

Call Crossrail's bluff.

Jesus no service great northern, little service drumroll...... Thameslink

Thanks for the answer but Why reply if you're just going to be a muppet about it.

I didn't think those abbreviations related to boxing day working as the op said it was voluntary.
