I'm hoping one of you knowledgeable chaps can help my understanding of Crossrail. I've been looking at the crossrail site and googling but all the inof I can find is fairly superficial.

I used to live near Taplow on the route and still occasionally find myself out there.

I'm wondering what the impact will be on current services and if there's any information inthe public domain about frequencies (other than the headline 24tph in the peak in the central section).

Will Crossrail be instead of current services? If so how do these link to Reading - will you have to change at Maidenhead?

Or will they all be additional?

Or will it be a bit of a mix?

Will Crossrail trains have variable stopping patterns as per the current t/t?

Or are we all just guessing?

Anticipating your replies.

Proposed Crossrail services when I was working on the project were

peak

12tph Shenfield
12tph Abbey Wood

of which

10 tph Shenfield - Paddington
2 tph Shenfield - Maidenhead
2tph Abbey Wood - Maidenhead
2tph Abbey Wood - Maidenhead
4tph Abbey Wood - LHR
2tph Abbey Wood - West Drayton
2 tph Abbey Wood - Paddington

Services west of Paddington skip stop - so Acton ML has 4tph, W Ealing 4tph, Hanwell 2 tph Southall 8 tph

Reading _ Maidenhead dmu shuttle service to link in with Crossrail.

Off peak pattern

2 tph Shenfield Maidenhead
4 tph Abbey Wood to LHR
4 tph Shenfield to Paddington
4 tph Abbey Wood to Paddington

There will be a few peak period only services from Shenfield to Liverpool St (4tph?)

Local Reading services to Paddington all removed - shuttle service to Maidenhead - all other services are moved to Fast Lines

Heathrow Express continues - Heathrow Connect replaced by Crossrail

Things may have moved on since then

Thanks for this.

This suggests that many stations will not see an improvement in the number of tph (of the ones you've mentioned West of Paddington, Acton ML goes from 2->4 and Southall 4->8 but Hanwell, West Ealing no change). I realise they should benefit from faster journey times and a cross-London Link.

Any ideas what the plan is/was further west?

Off peak to the west trains also skip stations so number of trains are as follows
Maidenhead
Taplow
Burnham
Slough
Langley Iver
West Drayton
Hanwell

all 2 tph

LHR 4 tph

Hayes, Southall & E Broadway 6 tph
W Ealing and Acton ML 4 tph

An insider at the DfT told me two years ago that Crossrail would extend to Reading. Not sure if this is still the case, but I hope so. He also said that he wanted Heathrow Express to be made to divert via Crossrail and end-on with Stansted Express, but that his superiors had not pursued it.

Trains terminating at Paddington will either continue to turnback sidings or continue to a new station at Kensal Green/Ladbroke Grove which will have no services to destinations further west.

Electrification of Great Western will in theory allow Crossrail to be extended to Reading but this is not included in proposals as yet.

Crossrail HS interchange station adds further complications.

The tunnels will be twin bore

Why not just extend Crossrail to Reading then? Of course many could just jump on the first fast service to Paddington and change there, but the thought of having a one seat journey all the way to the West End, City and Canary Wharf sounds pretty sweet. It will make working and going out in London a lot easier for those outside the M25.

That's already on the cards with the GW electrification coming. Passive provision has already been made for Crossrail to Reading.

Slough and Maidenhead currently have 4tph off peak. I presume, therefore that only the Reading stoppers will be withdrawn, with the Oxford stoppers being retained, so maintain the current service level

I wonder whether Twyford (between Maidenhead and Reading) will lose its regular London service? Perhaps it would get more HST stops.

It's quite an important station because it is the gateway to the Henley-on-Thames line. If there is just a Reading<->Maidenhead shuttle service, travelling between Henley and London would require two changes.

So is that only 2tph all the way out to Maidenhead? That'll disappoint a few people looking forward to Crossrail.

I'm sure quite a few people will be disappointed with Crossrail once it eventually starts up!

Crossrail will take over all NXEA Shenfield - Liverpool Street metro services - however there is the possibility of a limited peak only service continuing to operate into Liverpool street

I imagine Crossrail will make a stop there if/when it is extended to Reading. Perhaps Oxford stoppers will make more regular stops there.

Heathrow Express continues - Heathrow Connect replaced by Crossrail

Two questions:

When is this supposed to happen? Nine of us will be flying in from the US in July and I much prefer the more reasonable fares of the Heathrow Connect.

Will this Crossrail provide comparable service to the Heathrow Connect?

don't worry. This won't happen for several years

First things first, a question. What will become of the Greenford service? Will it terminate at West Ealing?

Anyway, another crazy idea from Ivo. I can tell you all that a lot of people in south Essex are annoyed that only the Metro service is being converted to Crossrail. Why not introduce some faster services, as with the Thameslink scheme? You can have St Albans or Luton to south London (if admittedly not for much longer, because of the over-hyped Thameslink Programme), and also faster services from Bedford to Brighton, but Crossrail is all slow. Off-peak at least, the extra capacity in the tunnel could be used by running faster services between Reading (and pull it from the local service) and Southend. There used to be a coach that did this, and it was very successful. (Until the companies started fighting over revenue anyway.) I have heard that Abbey Wood services may eventually run to Gravesend, so it would be a natural extension. There could be four an hour, providing Twyford with a solution and also encouraging tourism in Southend, not to mention an improved service for the Airport. And during peak hours, services that start at Liverpool Street on the Metro could run semi-fast to Romford (i.e. Stratford and Ilford) and then all stations to Wickford, alleviating pressure on the Southend route in the process.

Mind you, South Essex is predominantly Conservative. And Crossrail was started in a Labour period. So unless the Tories win, I can't see this happening. It's not as though the area is full of marginal seats...

Crossrail is now a TfL scheme to be paid for mainly by Londoners or businesses based there. The previous and present Mayor therefore see it as a local London service and not to be used by longer distance services. So while in the past there have been proposals to provide longer distance services through the tunnel they have all been kicked into touch.
