Roger Ford talks in Modern Railways about SWT getting 'up to' 40x five car Desiro Cities to keep pace with passenger loadings and, more importantly, the 10 car NR is delivering. To avoid build a new depot its suggested that updating the traction package will allow for less maintainance on the 455/456 fleets, freeing up space to look after the additional 200 carriages.

Is it as simple as option b goes to a larger number of places so will be of more benefit, but will cost more?

Basicly yes. Although a lot of the extra places it goes to are already on lines which currently run into Waterloo, so it would be diverting them onto Crossrail 2, so not as expensive as if it was a new line to those places.

Anyone else wondering how approx 68km of tunnel + 13 undergound stations + rebuilding bits of the SWML + 2 extra tracks from Tottenham Hale to Broxbourne Junction is £12bn...

Whilst 42km of tunnel + 8 underground stations + rebuilding bits of the GWML is £16bn?

Isn't Optimism bias around 66% making the proposed line by London First closer to £36bn in total? (Although this is still early days).

I think your maths is very wrong...

66% of £12bn is 8bn optimism bias, so £20bn with optimism bias included...


As for why it's cheaper, the space for two tracks in the Lea Valley is mostly there, the SWML rebuild is planned anyway the locations for the underground stations are in the most part easier to build - none are in a dock filled with water for instance, passive provision provided at TCR and Victoria so no need to muck about with a live station which would add to the cost and fewer are in zone 1.

CR2 doesn't need to pay for the Victoria tube station upgrade, nor the Tottenham Court Road upgrade as both are future proofed. There's about £2bn saved by CR2 there, with £1bn of that from CR1's budget...

Ah your right in the maths, I misread what it was saying. Still near doubling of cost tho and presented wrongly. However your maths is faulty as well, £16bn for CR1 and £20bn for CR2 doesn't not mean CR2 is cheaper at all.

Do you actually realise that Lee Valley four tracking isn't paid for? NR are proposing three tracking current as its a lot cheap and avoid the difficult parts. Crossrail 2 means doing the hard parts.

Wimbledon, Tooting Broadway, Clapham Junction, Euston Kings Cross St Pancras, Angel and Tottenham Hale all busy stations that will need mucking around with so don't share your opinion its not going to muck around with live stations. Will be just as dispositive to many stations but in more areas in more places.

True, but then to go and put a fourth track in whilst doing the third is cheaper than doing it at a later date.

True, but there is always the option to built it later if it needed. However it is much better that the government (as ultimately that is where the money comes from) spends that £1 on Crossrail 2 as a regional metro as I would have thought that it was a much better use of that money.

I think that if you look at the cost difference of the cheapest option and the most expensive (a little more than £4 billion) and the extra benefits that are obtained then it would almost be crazy not build the metro, especially as at least £1 billion of that has to be spent on the SWML anyway. As well future proofing the Lee Valley by making four tracks (part of the cost of which is also already budgeted for).

The final point is that Crossrail has had some of its budget funded by a levy, which I would have thought is likely to continue to fund Crossrail 2, meaning that the actual cost to the government is less, but wouldn't be able to be used to fund those other works if they weren't part of Crossrail 2.

I can't imagine what the benefits of it beying just a tube line will be other than saving a bit building the tunnel portals and connections, especially since the option to run to Stanstead would exist with option b.

The safeguarded route doesn't really make any sense today.

I can't believe it won't open for another 19 years though.

I think they missed d), which includes a line up to the end of my road.

I vote d too, as long as it swings by Potters Bar on the way south...

Not a problem.. From Hatfield Business Park, it can nip down alongside or under the A1 for a bit then cut over to your place and rejoin the ECML there.

Probably not be reused the channel tunnel ones were cut up in situ or in one case left under the seabed in a side tunnel as it was cheaper. As I understand most of these machines are custom built for a particular job and are worn out at the end.

One of the Channel Tunnel ones was reused (It did both running tunnels from Sangatte to Coquelles). 9 of the other 10 had the disadvantage of ending their work in the middle or at the edge of the English Channel (well, under it) and therefore not easily recoverable.

The Crossrail machines, like most TBMs, have a sell back clause to Herrenkneckt who can then reuse / recondition them for another customer.

I meant cheaper than you would have thought.

Though that said - the £16bn is using 2007 pounds, IIRC - we've certainly inflated away enough of the pounds worth to make £20bn 2013 pounds (though they aren't clear on what base they have) be worth less than £16bn Crossrail is costing. Add to it the construction industry inflation, and this scheme is a little bit cheaper in real terms.

I know it's not yet paid for, but I take it you've not seen that a developer wants it four-tracked to Northumberland Park (dealing with all the hard bits) and is willing to put some cash in for it.

TfL don't like the 3-track NR option anyway, and will work at getting it 4-tracked. Given we're talking CR2 opening in 2032, I reckon on the Lea Valley being 4-tracked to Cheshunt at least 5, if not 10, years before that. Leaving a small bit to the Hertford East Junction to do.

Euston Kings Cross St Pancras isn't a station - it's two. Euston will be rebuilt so no need to muck around with a live station (not that I suggest that in my OP) because they will give the provision, and KXSP will have a simple, single, link, meaning not too much disruption.

Tottenham Hale will have been rebuilt for 4-tracks by TfL extending the Overground, part funded by developers. There's no work to be done there, other than changing the rondel. There's work on the railway near Tottenham Hale, but not the station. But again, I didn't mention Tottenham Hale would be a breeze (though the station itself will be).

Of course there will be disruption elsewhere, especially if they do the decent thing and build cross platform interchanges at Tooting Broadway and Turnpike Lane (Angel would be good too, though they missed the boat in the 90s rebuild - as would Tottenham Hale, Cheshunt and Broxbourne, but it looks like the slows will be to one side of the formation) - but not at the massively busy zone 1 stations that have needed billion pound upgrades.

That should be a doddle in Crossrail engineering terms and there's a park right next door to make digging out a box for the station/turnback sidings/both easier.

And if they do the logical thing and separate the Waterloo slow line services and the CR2 slow line services by serving Woking and Guildford (and Staines via Weybridge if you want) rather than Chessington South and Epsom, that would mean you could just plug-in without upgrades to improve slow-line capacity (which would be for reliability and decreasing performance pollution reasons).

Would the trains need to be 3rd rail and overhead compatable or would some track need changing to overhead wires?

I imagine that Ware will require significant work as that's currently single track. Especially if EWR's lofty (and unlikely) Stanstead connection is to go anywhere.

I had assumed the machines could be refurbished and go on to dig more tunnels, but that one of the problems was how to get them out in one piece. Certainly that was the problem with the machines used in the channel tunnel.

From Channel Tunnel Trains by Peter Semmens and Yves Machefert-Tassin.

There were seven full-sized TBMs with four smaller ones for the service tunnel. To save on a machine, one of the French TBMs bored one rail tunnel from the Sangatte shaft to Calais (3 km) where it was turned around and send back to Sangatte. Where the tunnels met in the middle, the British TBMs turned aside, where the cuttting head of at least one (I couldn't work out how many) is still interred and acts as an earthing point for the electrification. The French TBMs made the breakthrough, and were dismantled in situ.

I don't think the authors covered that, but I'm guessing it's one of the Sangatte-Calais ones. Rail tunnel or service tunnel depends on size.

Given (other than fitting it out to do both) modern stock appears to be more expensive to run on either power type running duel powered stock will not be a problem. Likewise change overs aren't too difficult, however given some of the branches off the SMWL are not too long it is likely that they'd get converted to limit the number of change overs.

Well in the DC to AC conversion lecture (linked in the BML conversion thread a few weeks ago) the slow lines between Surbiton and Waterloo were highlighted as an area for capacity and journey time improvements through AC conversion because of how much faster AC units accelerate

Allowing the power restrictions on the CLass 444s and Class 450s would certainly improve journey times.
Above 15mph I believe the units are limited to ~60% power...... which is why Class 159s have similar times to Basingstoke as them.

Even 110mph (and running at full power) would make a noticeable difference (as then there is no need to change the front end of the trains). Esp. if much of the 75mph stock was replaced by Crossrail 2 services running for only short times on the main lines and with newer faster stock.

IIRC, Class 50s used to hit 90 along the main line on a regular basis. The braking distance of an HST from 125 was intended to be 'no longer than current rolling stock from 100'. It seems unlikely to me that they would have to make any major changes to accommodate 110 or 125, especially if modern brakes have reduced stopping distances to less than an HST can manage, let alone a 50.

As you say, and it's all academic unless they remove freight from the route west of Basingstoke. This was discussed only a few months ago with respect to why XC don't run at a decent speed on the SWML...

But it is likely any resignalling work will set stopping distances to what modern EMU stock is capable of from 100mph.

Which is rather shorter than what modern EMU stock requires to stop from 125mph.
