Crossing the Med between Spain and Morocco by ferry.

Hi all. I require guidance please.

In three weeks time my son and I are aiming to cross the Med between Spain and Morocco. The Man in Seat 61 recommends the ferry between Tarifa and Tangier Town.

There are two ferry companies, Balearia and AML. I've attempted to book online with both. With Balearia the booking process seems straightforward, but it always trips me up by stating that my phone number is invalid. You choose the Union Jack logo, with prefix +44, then add your mobile number, minus the first two numbers. But time and time again it rejects the number. With AML it is equally frustrating because you can complete the whole booking process, only for payment (by debit card) to be declined.

Has anyone else had this problem? if so, how do you overcome the problem. Or, does anyone else have any better ideas?

The +44 only replaces the '0' in your mobile, not the first two digits.

Baleria seems to have a phone booking service, including an English language line, so perhaps it would be easier that way.

I did this crossing last year with no problems. FRS (now discontinued) one way and AML the other.

Do you actually need to book? I've not travelled this route for a long time, but I remember just turning up and buying a ticket for the next available boat.

Indeed, that's what we did 10 years ago.

Did this crossing a couple of weeks ago. Went with Baleria from Tarifa to Tangier Town using the free transfer bus from Algeceras port. I had the same issue with pre-booking, but was able to book via their phone app. The phone number issue doesn't occur when using the app.

You definitely don't want to lose two digits from your mobile number
