On 23rd February I travelled from Sheffield to Birmingham with split tickets. One set of tickets from Sheffield to Nottingham (valid via Derby) and Derby to Birmingham.

Of course the 23rd was when Storm Doris decided to pay a visit.

After I finished what I needed to do I was to go back to Derby where I would be met to get a lift to attend a meeting near Nottingham, hence the ticket from Sheffield to Nottingham.
Due to the fact I didn't get out of Birmingham until after 4pm (I had tried since half 1) I clearly didn't attend my meeting. Some trains were running if you could actually get on them.

Crosscountry have responded to my delay repay claiming that they will not pay for the Sheffield to Nottingham tickets as they do not run services from Nottingham to Sheffield. My argument is they run trains to Derby and from Derby to Sheffield so therefore in theory they do actually run services to Sheffield from Nottingham.

Before I write back to them stating that they are wrong, is anything wrong with the tickets I have purchased or any words of wisdom?

So to clarify you actually travelled:

Sheffield - Birmingham (not delayed?)
Birmingham - Sheffield (delayed?)

They're obviously liable for the ticket from Birmingham-Derby.

As you weren't planning to travel by train from Derby-Nottingham, then I can't see how they're liable for that bit of journey. As you were never in Nottingham, I don't think that they're liable for Nottingham-Derby either.

So if you've claimed for the full Nottingham-Sheffield journey, I can see their challenge. I'd argue that they ought to cover for you for the travel from Derby-Sheffield, but I don't know the procedure given that you didn't use the full validity of the ticket (that is, I don't know if they're in their rights to consider only a portion of the ticket?) but it would seem to me that if you traveled Derby-Sheffield on a Nottingham-Sheffield ticket and were delayed then you'd still have a claim.

Have you contacted customer.relations@crosscountrytrains.co.uk ? I've found them to be pretty good in the past.

As I read it, you were not planning on using the train between Derby and Nottingham and therefore it is wrong to attempt to claim Delay Repay for this.

Birmingham-Derby, they are definitely liable for.

Sheffield to Nottingham hasn't been valid via Derby for a while now; there was a fair bit of discussion on here when the map permissions were changed.

There is however a sneaky way of getting NRE to validate the route... ;)

Is there? I just searched 'Sheffield - Nottingham via Derby' and it produced the route, as did other journey planners. I'm not sure that this is parituclarly 'sneaky'? :s

Yes, but you were planning to drive to Nottingham and then get a train. You didn't travel back from Nottingham because you didn't drive there. There's no delay to claim for as you weren't delayed.

The limitation of Delay Repay is that it doesn't cover people who chose to cancel their travel, and it doesn't cover you for costs subsequent to the journey that you've made.

If your plan was to get off a train at Derby and drive to Nottingham, the next journey you make by train is not the same journey, even if you miss it due to delays on the train journey (in the same way that if my train from home to Newcastle was delayed and I missed a flight to (say) Exeter Airport, CrossCountry wouldn't then be liable for any train travel I'd planned in the South West). At the moment, train companies are not liable for subsequent loss, just for the journey itself.

That said, I still think that you should be able to claim for the Derby-Sheffield journey you made using this ticket.

Well I have emailed them back and got a response that they are paying for the full delay and it was over 2 hours.

I get the feeling they are confused as me

NRE won't ordinarily offer the route on a through ticket. Some journey planners will give itineraries but I've often found NRE more useful when debating valid routes with staff. YMMV

I also know how to purchase tickets via Derby, even with reservations, but I probably won't be able to again now that it is being discussed here.
