CrossCountry HST First Class

Hello all,

Next week, either a Wednesday or Thursday I'm looking at doing a round trip from Bristol to Plymouth, going down on 1V44 and back on 1E63, getting both Cross Country HST sets in.

I know they aren't due to retire until October but this will be my farewell day out, the last time I'll go on one of these, so planning to get a First Class return, being the first and last time I'd do First Class on one of these.

I would get an advance but will splash out on a walk up fare instead, I know it's a lot but the problem with getting an advance is having to choose the day, then hoping it's not the day a Voyager appears instead, which seems to have happened last week. But that's assuming on weekdays First Class isn't full up on weekdays south of Bristol?

What do you get in First Class nowadays? Any food and drink I might need to bring? Do you get a hot drink or should I buy one before I board? Just want to prepare what I should bring.

Any help appreciated!

I travelled back first class a couple of months ago from Bristol - Sheffield and during that time I got a couple of hot drinks ,sandwich , crisps.
Yesterday I did both HST XC sets and neither had the ‘advertised catering ‘ on board so better to be prepared .

Cheers for this. I'm booked with XC this week and hoping, during the 10 minute stop at Temple Meads, I'll have time to run down stairs and grab a pasty instead.

Looks like it will cost you around £127; not worth paying that much in my experience!

But that's assuming on weekdays First Class isn't full up on weekdays south of Bristol?

First will be dead; not many people are prepared to pay the incredible premium!

Do you get a hot drink or should I buy one before I board?

If you've already eaten breakfast and/or are having lunch on arrival, it's not really a concern as it's only a 2 hour journey. If you want a substantial meal definitely bring your own stuff! You may only get snacks.

If you're like me and like to have brunch around this time, I would bring something! I got a bacon roll from Derby to Bristol on a Sunday a couple of weeks ago (served around Cheltenham), but it wasn't great and I'd have been better off waiting until I got to Bristol to be honest.

Again for the return, if you've eaten lunch and are having dinner after you arrive back, there isn't really any need to bring anything. If you are lucky you may get offered a sandwich but no way to know until the day.

I didn't sample the catering south of Bristol as I got off there.

Yes I am aware of the high cost, however it is the last time I'll be on a HST in service and the last time in a First Class Mk3, yes wasn't looking for a large amount of food but wasn't sure if there was any snacks and importantly any hot drinks

Have decided to drive to Chippenham and get the train from there to Bristol, so will probably get a First Class return from there, may as well try First Class in the IET, not even been on one yet.

I assume there is no GWR only fare, I don't want to be sold one if those
