Someone on another forum is claiming that he has see CrossCountry trains bypassing Masborough and going through Rotheham Central (not stopping) on their way to/from Sheffield in midweek recently, on two separate occasions at around 1725 and 1830.

I will try and get the specific dates but any ideas why this could have been? Not the best diversion given the single track at the western end - delayed his train back to Sheffield both times.

Dates would be helpful. The two trains that are booked this way SSuX are 1E64 and 1E68 (passing RMC at 21.00 and 22.08 respectively), which both go forward to Doncaster via Thrybergh Jn.

Do any XC diagrams include the Woodburn junction line via Tinsley to Rotherham Central too?

PSUL lists one:
1E68 1746 SSuX Southampton Central - York

You do get the odd ad hoc diversion through Rotherham and/or Thrybergh+Kilnhurst. I guess avoiding slow freights or congestion at Masborough would be a possible reason for Rotherham Central, and I've seen a late-running XC from Doncaster overtake the previous stopper at Swinton by going via Kilnhurst.

I was on a train diverted from Aldwarke via Central and Nunnery a few years back when (according to the announcement) the route via Meadowhall was flooded.

This Saturday and Sunday all Doncaster stopper services will be diverted via Tinsley and Woodburn to/from Sheffield.
Leeds stopping services are running fast via Masborough

Thanks also for the tip off. I'll be going down to grab a few pictures. Any suggestions on a good spot for it?

From N to S:
Some odd angles by the new football ground in Rotherham and down by Booths scrapyard.
The bridge by Magna in Rotherham - by the look of the timetable, the half-hourly services will cross each other somewhere on that bit of double track.
If you can get there (the towpath is being closed this summer), Halfpenny Bridge over the Don has a view across with Tinsley viaduct in the background.
The footbridge by tram stop at Meadowhall South under the M1 Tinsley viaduct.
A couple of the tram stops on the single track section past the entrances to Tinsley yard.
A couple of road bridges out the back of Attercliffe Road.
And a footbridge at Woodburn Junction.

Good luck!

I think I may have gone that way a few weeks ago on Good Friday when travelling on a very busy train from Sheffield to York.
