CrossCountry Cancellations

Today is the third day in a week that my planned train home from Birmingham to Nottingham has been cancelled due a shortage of drivers. The 17.49 departure was cancelled last Friday (though we were told it was a train fault and that a fitter was looking at it) and yesterday. The 17.19 was cancelled today. I understand there have been cancellations on the other CC class 170 route to Leicester as well. I hope this is a temporary summer blip and not a return to the days when Central Trains was at its worst!

Can anyone confirm what the exact cause is?

Perhaps it has something to do with the industrial action being taken by XC staff this month? I had a brief chat with a XC guard earlier who said relations with management at Arrival were very poor at the moment. Incidently, I was also offered a complimentary hot drink from the on board trolley as I had a First Class ticket (I was on a 170).

Yep there is a month of non-industrial action by members of the RMT on CrossCountry; no overtime, no sundays (unless booked), no rest day working and no on-train litterpicking.

It's been advertised on NRES that a few XC services between Cardiff - Birmingham - Nottingham, and Birmingham - Leicester are cancelled because of no available staff.

It's quite sad that given Arriva's profits are back on the increase they couldn't have sorted this and prevented the industrial action from taking place.

Just noticed that the 14.08 XC Edinburgh to Plymouth terminated at Bristol TM, and the 18.05 Manchester Picc - Plymouth terminated at New Street.

Obviously got serious issues today.

As other posters have stated, it's all down to the industrial action taking place at the moment. All overtime, rest day working and non rostered Sunday working is banned. This is affecting the 170 side more than the ex Virgin side.

I noticed that 3 consecutive Nottingham's were cancelled yesterday, as well as the last train of the day from New Street to Leicester.

XC have drafted in managers to work some trains as well but there are still cancellations.

They've cancelled trains today even though there were spare Conductors available, which does seem very strange.

More talks are planned for tomorrow.

Ah that old trick one group of people who are needed don't turn up meaning the other group can turn up get payed but the service can't operate. I am sure at some point the favor is returned.....

If you're travelling tomorrow then the 0837, 1637 off Nottingham and the 0649, 1719, 1819,2210, 2310 off New Street are all cancelled.

Not been a good day today either. Arrived at New St from Euston and saw the following cancellations:

12:22 New St - Leicester (apparently due to unit failure)
12:42 New St - Bristol
13:04 New St - Bournemouth (no staff)

BTP had to be called due to several angry passengers yelling verbal abuse at staff over the south coast cancellation.

Noticed these trains are also cancelled:

4:19 New St - Nottingham
4:30 New St - Cardiff
4:49 New St - Nottingham
4:11 Leicester - New St

I anticipate tomorrow will be even worse.

How did you get that info from the Transport Direct website? After a quick browse, it only provides links to the National Rail LDBs. s there a way to access historical live arrivals and departure boards for earlier in the day, as NRES call centres can, to find out what was cancelled?

Incidently, BBC Radio 5 has just warned over impending cancellations on XC trains tomorrow due to industrial action.

TD can indeed provide you with historical data for the entire current day.

On older versions of internet explorer, it displays both arrival and departure times for specified trains, although the newer versions of IE appear to only show the times they depart, although you can still get arrival times by doing seperate searches.

Sunday working is still voluntary* for Senior Conductors on the ex Central Trains side of things, something which XC management have never sought to address.

You don't need to be a genius to work out what it will be like tomorrow.

There's less than half a dozen volunteers so far!

* Train drivers have been harmonised and have to do 1/3 of their rostered Sundays until Dec 2009, 2/3 from Dec 09 to Dec 10 and then 100% from Dec 2010. Their salary will have increased by over £12 000 in that time, to around £47 000.

There were riots in Birmingham today, I wonder if this was one of the reasons for some staff being AWOL from New Street today?

(Obviously I don't mean they were involved in the riots. )

And briefly on TheBigD's post above, I bet if you had told a BR driver in the late 80's that some drivers would be on £47,000 per year in 20 years time, they'd have probably laughed in your face! How far we've come, ehh...

As with most things put arriva in charge and thats it... Virgin made a mess of the franchise now Arriva is making a bigger mess, when will crosscountry travel be good again. I really used to like Arriva but having read all this, i'm starting to get bad feeling about it all.

Slight better today than last week. The 06:37 from Nottingham was cancelled. I couldn't see any cancellations to the evening services from Birmingham.

Well, when I checked on the internet before leaving home it did show as cancelled from Nottingham to Birmingham!
