Hello,

I've been invited to an assessment event for Cross Country trains and I'm not totally sure what to expect. I've been told I have to do a numerical test, station and ticket verbal test and a group exercise.

They are sending me practice exercises in the post which I have yet to receive.

Anyone had to do this before?

The practice material will have been sent out to you by now.

It is very relevant, especially for the mathematics test. Practice manually adding numbers up, for example silly random amounts like £126.56 plus £42.45 without a calculator.

Then, the STVT test is a basic comprehension test where a set of questions are asked related to a passage of text or instructions printed above them. This is fairly easy.

After the tests is a group exercise, where you will discuss a (no-win) situation where difficult decisions have to be made. Most recently, some of the XC scenarios have been a hospital making cuts to departments, and a sinking yacht with only space to save four survivors. These are usually different every time.

The candidates are then split.

If unsuccessful, you are sent home.

If successful, you will then progress to interview where you will be asked an array of questions related to how you faced situations in your previous jobs.

The tests are scored by a set pass mark, quite straightforward. The group exercise is more complicated, and the score awarded depends solely on who's doing the marking from the XC Recruitment or Depot staff, and if you fail on this never get too downhearted, there really is no right answer to give at the group exercise.

I received the test papers yesterday, the STVT was pretty easy got 9/10 first time so I think I'll do alright there. The numerical one wasn't to bad, got 7/10 and really should've got 8 and one mistake was really basic. Think the biggest issue will be my confidence as I haven't really needed to work things out for a while and math is never been my strong point.

As for the group exercise that doesn't sound too bad, it depends on the scenario and what type of people are with you.

Fingers crossed for next Wednesday, trying to be optimistic!
