I have a Cardiff Central to Walthamstow Central ticket with a Maltese Cross and I intend to break the cross-London section at Kings Cross/St. Pancras tube. My query is regarding the journey from Central London to Walthamstow.

Would I be able to travel Kings Cross (Mainline) to Finsbury Park then on to Walthamstow on the Victoria Line or would I have to go Liverpool St - Walthamstow Central on Greater Anglia?

Thanks.

If you break your cross London transfer, the cross-London transfer is considered expired. You would need to make your own way to Liverpool Street if you wished to resume your journey there.

This is described in our Fares Guide, 7.3 - LU & DLR.

...It is permitted to finish your transfer short at any Underground station in zone 1 or at any intermediate Underground/DLR station on a reasonable route. If you choose to do this, no further Underground/DLR travel is permitted with that ticket; you will need to purchase an additional ticket if you wish to continue by Underground/DLR. ...

Your ticket will work the gates to exit at King's Cross, but you should buy another ticket (or use PAYG, or take a bus/taxi/cycle hire or walk) to get to Liverpool Street.

Note that if your ticket is an Advance ticket, you are not permitted to "break your journey", however using station facilities such as a visit to the Parcel Yard would not constitute a break of journey, nor would a walking interchange to Liverpool Street. (and before you ask how this could be enforced... just don't ask!)

I appreciate that the OP wants to break their journey at Kings X/St Pancras.

But ... given that Walthamstow Central is on the list of exit/entry stations for cross-London transfers using tickets marked with a "+", could the OP use their ticket to make the whole of the Paddington-Walthamstow journey by Underground if they weren't planning to exit the Underground en route?

Ok, thanks very much. I've used the tube to travel between Paddington and Seven Sisters when going from Cardiff to Edmonton Green but because I'm breaking the journey I didn't know if Kings Cross to Finsbury Park on FCC and then on to Walthamstow on the Victoria Line was valid. Looks like a trip over to Liverpool St it is then.

Your ticket may not operate the gates at Walthamstow LU. Every time I've used a Maltese Cross ticket with destination Walthamstow this has been the case. This is because there is an unwritten rule about journeys not starting or ending with a cross-London transfer. The expectation is that you go via Liverpool St.
