I was playing with system and discovered that journeys from Stratford and points east up to and including Zone 6, to South (East) London have a +Not London option available. I did a Stratford - Clapham High Street route check (noting the TfL Fares Finder does not give a Not London fare) and it gave the following route;

Stratford LU - West Ham - Limehouse LTS - Shadwell DLR - Norwood Junction - East Croydon - Clapham Junction - Battersea Park - Clapham High Street.

Given the catchment of availability of this route, I'm of the belief that a +Not London routing implies the user should be using the DLR between Stratford and Greenwich, Lewisham or Woolwich Arsenal. However, I don't think the "Not London" bit applies if you're going via London subterranean, because the + allows travel between any two of the listed LU stations, so it's quite feasible to do Stratford - London Bridge - Balham - Battersea Park - Clapham High Street. Or break journey at Clapham North then buy a single to Clapham High Street upon resumption of journey ;).

I also had somebody grilling me over the route validity of Boundary Zone tickets and if they could be used to cross London. The crux of their argument being that certain BZ tickets are routed Not London whilst others say Any Permitted (no cross.) They wanted to know if their Zone 6 Only TC was good to get them from Chipstead to Watford Jn with an extension routed Any Permitted. I'm only too happy to sit down and discuss things like this with customers. Possibly the reason why BZ tickets are only valid from the outer edge of the TC and also why it's not possible to buy BZ extensions to lower numbered zones, to prevent people assuming "mirrored" validity of the ticket via Zone 1. The suggested excess is an inboundary Travelcard.

Any thoughts?

Is this a new thing I wonder? The reason I ask is it strikes me as possible that these are fares associated with use of London Overground.

What is wrong with Overground (old North London line) to Willesden Junction, Willesden Junction to Clapham Junction then on from there?

The Overground extension scheduled to open in late Feb (ie the East London line extension to Highbury and Islington) may also offer other possibilities, changing from the old North London line at H&I (or indeed Canonbury) then taking the extension through Dalston Junction into South London. Indeed the next phase of Overground development will take it into Clapham Junction from that route also.

I had considered that, but going by the current definition of Cross London transfer which doesn't include London Overground at all, it doesn't seem to be the case. There are a few routes already such as Surrey Quays Hackney Wick, Willesden Junction, Hackney Central+Downs etc. which can be used.

I wonedr if this is just a reflection of the slightly strange status of London Overground? ATOC doubtless just regard it as just another TOC whereas TFL regard it very definitely as different (to the extent that they differentiate between it and the rest of National Rail) and part of its fifedom.....
