On an off peak ticket with the Maltese cross symbol does the underground part have to be off peak.
My ticket is Finsbury Pk to Dover off peak day return but starting short at Kings Cross outward across London to Victoria for the normal train to Dover can I travel on the underground at 09:10 to get the first train after 09:30 from Victoria?

There is no time restriction on the cross-London transfer AFAIK.

I don't think the Finsbury Park - Dover Priory Off-Peak Day Return will meet your needs. It has restriction code F3, making it not valid for travel from 0430 to 0959.

Depends how the LU validity is coded on the magstripe. If memory serves, it can be coded to be valid at any time, from 0900 or from 0930, though I believe the majority of tickets just have it set to "any time".

I assumed the point was the reference to "the first train after 0930 from Victoria", which would have to be the first train after 1000 with this ticket.

The 1st Class Off-peak day return is restriction code F3:
Not valid on trains timed to depart Mondays to Fridays after 04:29 and before 10:00

So if you're starting from Finsbury Park it's clear you can't start before 0930 (std) or 1000 (1st class).

If you start short can you commence at 0930/1000 from the station where you start short or must you only commence at a time in accordance with a departure from Finsbury Park at 0930/1000?

In some cases the Network Area Rule will mean you can travel to London at anytime but that doesn't apply as both stations are inside the Network Area.

In this case the difference in fare has little to do with restrictions and more to do with the Antimacassar on the seat.

I don't know.

Genuine question - do you have to take the time using trains from Finsbury Park and what would be possible from there (so I guess the first train you could realistically get from Victoria would be around 1000) or are you free to say it's past 0930 so I can get a train from any station on the route by starting short.

Yes - I was looking at if you started short at Victoria - presumably you'd be able to take a tube from 0930 at Kings Cross though.

I would hazard a guess that the Maltese crosses allowing Underground travel are subject to different or no restrictions, ie not the main restriction code. I'm not aware of anything setting this in stone, though.
