hi i recently traveled and back from Wolverhampton to Manchester piccadily on Sunday night on the 18:49 and much to my surprise it only stopped at stoke before continuing onto Manchester piccadily no other services do this that i can find is there any reason behind this.

I was surprised to find this too. I recently travelled on the Sunday 13.31 from Birmingham to Manchester which only stopped at Wolverhampton and Stoke.

Apparently most of the 'shorts' on Sundays from BHM to MAN operate to this pattern.

I think it was the first time I'd ever been on a service which passed through Stockport without stopping.

I know the feeling it felt weird passing though stockport. you where saying about it from birmingham, and i found that this one went from bristol called at most of the normal calling points and then turned into a express after wolverhampton

The first time doing Manchester in May was on a XC, first stop Stoke (final destination was Temple Meads, 18:07 from Manchester)

There was a time in 2008 IIRC when there was a political storm because some CrossCountry stopped calling at Stockport but they were reinstated at the next timetable change except on Sundays.

Some of them miss out Stafford on Sundays as well which is strange when travelling through it

Back then a fair number of local politicians were claiming that an Act of Parliament required all trains to stop at Stockport, but IIRC the Act could never be found...

Its funny how they don't mind the 4 overnight Transpennie and Arriva Trains Wales trains that don't stop there or the morning Buxton to Manchester train that doesn't stop there.

To be fair though it was a bad mistake removing Stockport as a stop as there is certainly a market to have all trains stopping.
