Cross Country Weekend 1st Class Upgrade

Im due to travel to Leeds tomorrow from Birmingham and then return on Saturday. I'm aware that Cross Country operate the £5 weekend upgrade, as a student where quite literally every penny counts, is it worth it?! Im a tall chap at 6 5' so the standard seats are quite a squeeze but don't mind doing travelling standard if needed. Ive heard rumours of the food/drink offering is rather pitiful compared to other TOC's but for £5 can I go wrong for the bigger seats and plugs etc? Also if so do I need to purchase the upgrade before travelling or can I seek an upgrade once the guard passes in first class? I have a YP advance ticket, not sure if that makes a difference.

According to brfares the upgrade would be £15 each way unfortunately. The quoted £5 would only cover as far as Sheffield.

Note that the Weekend First upgrade from Leeds to Birmingham is £15.00, not £5.00. Also note that you cannot get it with Advance tickets.

You can only purchase a weekend upgrade on xc with a std walk up ticket. If you wish to travel in first, you should have got a first advance ticket.

A couple of the seats in every carriage have extra legroom - usually about 1/3 of the way down.

I believe priority seats also offer extra legroom, although you will have to be prepared to give them up if requested en route. You get plug sockets in Standard Class on both Voyagers and HSTs anyway so the only benefit in First Class is some freebie drinks, and possibly free WiFi if the train is equipped. If every penny counts then unless travelling Standard is agony, I wouldn't bother.
