Bah! I like to be sociable. If people engaged each other in conversation on trains more the world would be a happier place.

Not in my opinion, I'd rather stand up in a vestibule than talk to some obnoxious **** from Birmingham (example for demonstration purposes only).

I was on a North Clyde service alone, was a Juniper, sat down at a table, then this guy comes on and starts chatting to everyone (obviously a bit tipsy to say the least) about the fact that no-one chats on trains anymore, and it got me thinking, why not?

Loads of people do!!

Everytime I'm on a train, I end up talking with loads of randomers!!

I only see people chatting say, when they have something to chat about, ie if the guard announcers a delay, and the reason sounds stupid (or something) then they might laugh, and start talking

Really depends on the person though, I don't mind talking to someone sensible but if you just want some peace, someone trying to jabber in your ear is the last thing you want.
