Cross country via Lichfield?

For the first time in years I'm on a Cross Country service from the north to Plymouth. Very surprised to find us routed via the very slow Lichfield route instead of the route via Water Orton that I'm used to
When did this become a thing? And why, given the train isn't calling at any of the stations?

Anyone travelling on CrossCountry this week should note that it appears the direct route between Birmingham and Tamworth is blocked with trains being diverted via Lichfield. Although this could reasonably be expected to add a few minutes into the running time between BHM and DBY, it actually...
