Hi there, I'm trying to reserve a seat on the Cross Country Trains website and I want to change the seat that has been allocated to me. When I click on the select your seat tab it says it's starting and then I get a large grey box where the map of the carriages that I should see. I'm using Windows 7 and have tried both Google Chrome and Firefox web browsers but it's still the same. I was wondering if it's a problem with their website at the moment? I have the latest flash player and Java installed. Thanks.

Oh yeah, they do don't they...I think that is why the second time I booked tickets on RSH to avoid it, as I really don't like the Print@Home thing

Yes, it is Flash and it doesn't work for me either.
Currently on a Windows XP PC with Firefox 9.0.1 and Flash version 11.1.102.55
Latest version of Flash is installed.
I was gonna email Cross Country trains and complain about the £1 fee to pick up tickets at the station. No booking fee is useless if they find other ways to put extra money on top of the ticket.

It's not a Flash problem though as all You Tube videos play perfectly. Flash is installed into the Google Chrome web browser so I don't really want to have to uninstall that. As several can't get it working it must be the web site at fault here.
Main reason XC charges to collect tickets from a TVM when print at home is available is because it doesn't operate any TVMs (not sure if it even operates any stations, but someone will put me right) and there's a small charge payable by the selling TOC to the printing TOC if you collect from another TOC's TVM. This is also why Southern's cheapest promo tickets claim to be only collectable from a Southern TVM.

XC Don't operate any stations.
But the likes of TPE will post you tickets for free anyway, and collect from any TVM for free too...

Cross Country never used to have any stations before re-franchising in 2007. Since then it has included the Stansted to Birmingham route and the Cardiff to Nottingham route and is the principal operator at a number of stations. However it doesn't seem to operate any of these. I checked the list below on nationalrail.co.uk

Chepstow - ATW
Lydney - ATW

Apparently some ticket machine manufacturers will not enable their machines to accept new ticket types unless the owning TOCs pay a charge. On some occasions Southern promotional fares have used new ticket types and these ticket machines have been unable to issue them as the owner hasn't paid the ransom.

I guess it's a balance thing TPE don't charge to print tickets from TVMs because they can recover the cost through charging other TOCs to print from their TVMs. XC on the other hand can't do this they will only ever be paying to print never reviving money from printing other TOCs tickets.
Same problem existed when I tried to change a seat on Friday.

It's strange that as such a widespread geographic operator does not control any stations. Some much smaller franchises are station controllers, however I suppose it is historical.

I'm not sure that's the entire reason. For the former Virgin Cross Country services they would in most cases be serving stations which had already been allocated to other TOCs to manage. For some of the former Central services though Cross Country could have taken over station management.
Aside from these, Durham must be one of the few stations where (I think) XC are the main operator (they have two an hour, midweek between the peaks) and EC only have one.
Actually who is the station operator of Burton upon Trent please?
Bizarre. Yes 5 years ago Central Trains were the dominant operator at Burton, but EMT (or predecessor MML) only ever operated the daily turbostar Burton-London.
Surely it would make sense for Water Orton, Burton and Willington to pass to XC? Does willington still have a poor service (a few per day)?
I imagine if you don't operate any stations at all then starting to operate them comes at a very substantial setup cost (think writing retail sales handbooks and all that). Appreciate XC could probably nick some from ATW, but I don't think they'd be in a hurry to put their hand up to operate a station.
Very good points. I guess I was thinking more about saving management time (since presumably at present, management of both XC and EMT will periodically visit Burton).

It's not in CrossCountry's safety certificate to operate any stations im told. A side note you can use CrossCountry's mobile app to purchase an 'm ticket' with no added cost
Would the be the same m ticket where if something happens to your mobile, or it just runs out of juice, you're stuffed and have to fork out for an entirely new ticket?

I didn't know it was possible to book specific seats with a plan on CrossCountry's website. Can this be done with any other TOC's website?
Chepstow and Lydney are mainly served by Arriva, only about six trains a day operated by CrossCountry call there.

And is that only for East Coast trains or can you book a specific seat on any train in the country. I know you can generally book any train journey but can you book specific seats.
Only EC trains; I assume the same is true for the XC site?
