Cross Country Train Manager...

...as per the title, what exactly is a Train Manager??

Is it another name for conductor?? I'm thinking I may try and apply for this position on their site but having made a stupid cock up on a conductor test I did for LM which cost me the entire assessment I'm thinking I will still be under the 6-month wait until I can take another conductors assessment.

Am I right or is a Train Manager something different??

As a Train Manager or Senior Conductor you will handle a wide range of responsibilities while remaining customer focused and approachable. Both roles are extremely busy, so in addition to checking and selling tickets, you'll assist our customers on board, ensure walkways are clear and that there are no safety hazards. Should any problems occur it will be up to you to sort out, however you will always have the support from our Control team. You will provide accurate and clear information at all times, but above all provide a feeling of safety and security for our customers.

Flexibility is essential as the shifts are varied and you will be expected to work weekends and bank holidays.

For both roles full training will be given and will be a mixture of classroom and centre training. The basic training will be 10 weeks for Train Managers and 9 weeks for Senior Conductors.

You will be provided with a full uniform.

XC have Train Managers on their longer services and Senior Conductors on their shorter services (Birmingham to Leicester, Cambridge and Stansted Airport and Cardiff - Birmingham - Nottingham).

Does anyone have any idea of the shift pattern a Train manager based at New street would be doing?
Also, what are XC like as an employer?

They pay us every 4 weeks on the dot which is the important bit.

If you go out there, do your job and keep your nose clean then you're left alone to get on with it. If you have a genuine problem that may affect work or require some time off then they provide adequate support and help employees out where possible. There are far worse TOCs out there to work for than XC. Travel arrangements are also very generous with Arriva/DB group.

I think TMs do a 5 day week and committed to so many Sundays a year (I may well be wrong). Shifts will range from very early morning starts to very late finishes.

Senior Conductor terms and conditions are far better for a little less money. However SCs only work a 4 day week, so the difference in salary can very easily be made up with a few days of overtime. Rest Day pattern for SCs is also much more regular and predictable.

The conductor test you failed with 6 month ban applies to all Guard's vacancies, this means Senior Conductor and Train Manager assessments. Depending on when you sat your tests with LM, the 6 months may be up by the time XC get round to organising assessments anyway.

I fear you won't be able to apply as the ad states training will start in April. So the tests will be soon after the cut off date for applications.

what commission do SC'S and TM'S get on ticket sales ?
