Anybody idea when XC Hst's will be coming into service, does anyone know how far they are on with the refurb of them, any also any pics if possible

axc should introduce 2 hsts (with valenta engines) + 1 set from emt and 1 set from nxec for holidaymakers (Manchester/Newquay, Newcastle/Newquay, Paignton/Newcastle, Newquay/Newcastle, Newquay/Manchester) on late may bank holiday saturday and following station and then for 10 saturdays (+1 sunday Plymouth-York hst diagram) from 1st saturday in July-September. MTUs (AXC fleet) will be introduced as and when refurbished and crew training completed.

The plan is that the carriages will have a Mallard style refurb, and the power cars will go to Brush for a MTU engine fitted first. I'm not sure how they are going to work the Summer Saturday services yet.

I am also of the impression that 43007, 104 and co are in Craigentinny at this time, what for is unknown at this time though.

Apart from that, they're gr-r-r-r-r-r-reat! Nothing quite like doing a mileage move on CrossCountry with a monsterous pair of Valentas from the North East to Newquay.

Must remember to do more of the Holidaymakers this year, including the Paignton to Newcastle! Getting well excited already, most likely due to the total lack of any Valenta thrash lately...hock:

You may be disappointed, I've heard this year the Newquay diagram (1V29/1M28 was it) will be LA79 (FGW's ex MML set) with a pair of FGW PC's, don't take it as gospel but it is what I have heard. Also been told that the trains that were GNER HST's last year (one ex Paignton, one from Newquay???) will again be sets from NXEC with the Newcastle-Newquay (1V49?) will be one of the sets XC have. Not confirmed, just what I have heard, but the source is reliable

V29 is indeed the MAN - NQY, M28 is the NQY - MAN. V49 is the NCL - NQY, although I forget the return headcode. E46 would be the PGN - NCL.

Either way, it should all be interesting. Didn't hear that about V29 and M28, but if that is the case then a pair of GW power cars out of Manchester would be good to see.

lol It doesn't beat the old lady I was helping on to an ex-tpe 158 set on the Cardiff -Portsmouth who told me that this train had come a very long way what with being a transpennine train.

I hope HSTs are planned for Penzance - Scotland, because I'd love to do Plymouth - York on one.

IIRC, it's NE-SW for the HSTs, and of course the extentions to Glasgow, Aberdeen and Penzance are on that route. I'm hoping for one on the PZC-DEE and GLC-PZC services in particular. They're the longest routes on the network and deserve a more sensible train than a Voyager.

Imagine Penzance all the way to Dundee on an HST

Yes, HSTs will be covering the Plymouth to Edinburgh route, as mentioned in various rail magazines. Services are due to start from Dec '08 hopefully, & an intense refurbishment of the trains is underway as you know in order to get them ready for the new timetable.

I hope this is not FGW style HST refurbishment with seats barely softer than a 450's, woefully inadequate for 3 hour + journies, crushed in together with far few tables.

Would be fun to see how long the journey time would be though, Via Aberdeen of course about 4 hours aberdeen to thruso isn't it?

More leg room than the previous layout!

Yes there is more leg room which is pretty great but that interior just feels so incredibly claustrophobic and generic and should H&S or stinginess be blamed for them being so hard? The arm rests are terrible too! *rant*

Easier to get in and out of though as they move.

That would be no good though as for that to work everyone would have to have a seat which is highly unlikely on FGW
