Cross Country First Class (Voyager)

Just wandering if anybody could give me any info about what service you get in Voyager First Class. I will be travelling from Paignton - Bristol TM (1004 to manchester) and 1714 return on a weekday.

I've heard some good and bad things about XC first class, the service can be bad sometimes. The atmosphere doesn't look fantastic. Do you get free stuff in 1st class?

Apparently you get a free meal (and associated drinks and biscuits)where the shop is open although I've heard mixed messages and was wandering if anybody was in a position to clarify this for me without having to contact some clueless person at XC support!

it's a bit disappointing that on HSTs you get naff all food apart from crisps and warm tea due to the lack of power supply to keep the water boiling and total lack of buffet! As for voyagers, I'd upgrade if it was up to, say, £10 extra.

I would just drive if i were you. Never use XC unless you can help it. By the way i'm sure 10.04 off Paignton goes to Dundee i was on it today and it was full with standing only, 1st class aswell.

Unless its a weekend then it may go to Manchester.

No, this is after the timetable change when it goes to Manchester, Besides, I can't drive and would be a lot more expensive that the tickets i've got

I see fare enough then, well i think you basically get a box of nibbles, biscuits, crisps, can coke. Mind it is just snack size, don't skip any meals whatever you do get won't fill you. Think you get free tea from a trolley.

What 'e said. Collect le box from behind the counter of the shop, you are also entitled to nibbles and select food from the trolley (like tiny sandwiches) and free tea/coffee/juice.

I believe XC now offer hot sandwiches to those in First Class Monday-Friday only. See here for more details. However, the leaflet also suggests that for your journey, only the complimentary 'refreshments' will be available, so I'm guessing this means biscuits, Starbucks coffee, coke etc and not the hot food.

I travelled from Manchester to Birmingham with XC last Saturday. I had a choice of a £9 Standard Advance or a £15 First Advance. I haven't travelled with XC since Virgin days when I used it regularly.

I chose the first-class ticket as the website made clear that this would include complimentary refreshments and snack, even at weekends, although I suspected the snack would amount to no more than a bag of crisps.

In the event, there was nothing. Not even anything available for purchase. Refreshments are only available from the shop, and the shop does not operate after 20:30 aparently, and this train started just after then. The information stated on the website and in the menu cards on the first class tables is simply wrong.

There will be no first class service between paignton and bristol , so you will need to go to the shop, if you can get through the poxy train as its always busy

It's not always busy...I can't imagine it'll be so busy Liam cannot reach the shop.

As usual, I'll be happy to see evidence to the contrary involving Liam's service of choice.

Does anyone know what the current XC First Class is like on weekends? I'm travelling on an upgrade York-Sheffield so not sure what type of train (HST/Voyager?) it would be.

If you post what time your travelling, someone will probably be able to tell you if its going to be a HST or a Voyager.

XC first class is generally poor. The voyagers are just dire trains full stop; half the seats in first class don't align properly with the windows, so you're sat next to a bit of plastic. As the trains are so short first class is usually very busy, and isn't a quiet zone. Catering is generally poor too - microwaved filth which I wouldn't touch with a bargepole.

The first class carriages on their HSTs are excellent though, nice, big comfortable seats, big train so less busy, better lighting than FGW. Not sure about the catering as only been on at the weekend where it's tea/coffee/biscuits only.
