Just because the end-to-end service takes longer doesn't necessarily mean that average passenger's journey is also longer. XC's traffic is largely made up of shorter journeys, so whilst those making long journeys constitute the minority of overall passenger numbers.

As for reasonable alternatives/competition, it's half a dozen of one and six of the other. Both routes have sections with no reasonable alternative (between Bristol and Birmingham on SW/NE, between Oxford and Banbury on S/NW) as well as others with plenty of alternatives (between Penzance and Bristol, or Coventry and Stafford).

It's not a competition for who is worst off, nor is GWR/XC/the world out to get Plymouth. Everyone is being affected in some way by these cutbacks.
Yeah but the trouble is anyone in the south west going "up country" it is automatically a 3 hour plus journey just to get to Birmingham. If 3 hours isn't a long distance journey I don't know what is. Plymouth to BNS is 3 and a half hours and that's just to Birmingham, most people are travelling further than that (ie Manchester / Liverpool / Leeds. So suddenly thats more like 5 hours. Its very much an intercity route compared with the Reading route.

One diagram on the route was shortformed as a result of a lack of available Voyagers at Central Rivers in the morning, affecting two Southbound services and one Northbound. Overall, 10 out of 17 Southbound services and 11 out of 18 Northbound services still operated as double sets.

Interesting stats -- thanks. I was affected on the 0825 southbound from Coventry (four car), and the northbound 1715 ( five car) and 1815 (four car) from Reading. Managed to scrape the 1616 in the end, which was an eight car service (started at Reading, whereas the 1715 and 1815 were ex. Bournemouth services).

Again - it's a question of relative passenger numbers. How many people are actually going all the way from Plymouth to BHM/MAN/LIV/LDS?

And if they're travelling to the latter three, going via London is a perfectly viable option. The Reading route is no different in that respect, Bournemouth to Manchester is a 4.5 hour journey.

but there is this thread discussing why people dislike changing trains. Thats why XC do have some very long distance passengers

There's always a decent proportion in my experience going at least Plymouth to Birmingham. Thats way too far to stand when a 4 car voyager turns up. Reading to Birmingham on the other hand, at an hour and a half is slightly less bad if standing is required.

Unfortunately the 0825 from Coventry was indeed one of the services that was shortformed. Off the top of my head the 1715 from Reading would usually be an 8 car formation, not sure why it wasn't yesterday, and the 1815 is typically booked a single set during the week, though usually 5 car rather than 4.

Notts - Cardiff service is basically non existent today except for a couple of Derby - Birmingham shuttle's this morning and evening services to Nottingham. Nothing from around 1030 until 1930.

I imagine loads of drivers were rostered onto the New St resignalling brief again like last Saturday when they expected the RMT to be on strike. It has to be done unfortunately and with the government refusing to authorise the rest day working agreement this is probably the best way. It's far from ideal but at least there are other options for travellers on the Cardiff-Notts route.

Looks like a tender for management of rail replacement buses, probably due to a existing contract coming to an end.

Is the Plymouth-Edinburgh service regularly a 4 car as the 15:35 from Bristol was yesterday? Was "rather" busy...

5 today, although the previous 15:00 to Birmingham was cancelled due to an issue with the train crew. The 14:00 to Manchester Piccadilly started at Birmingham, once again due to an issue with the train crew.

On another note, Realtime Trains’ Know your Train is showing that HST set XC01 has a carriage missing, is this true?

Cardiff-Nottingham route appears virtually non-existent again today due to 'shortage of drivers'. Is the New Street resignalling briefing still an ongoing issue affecting this route in particular - or something else?

I am also wondering what on earth is going on. There must be less than 20% running. That can't just be lack of overtime.

I thought this was a result of the WMT RMT industrial action (but I’m probably wrong)

It's not just been the resignalling brief (although that hasn't helped). There has been other driver training ongoing too, principally route learning. It seems to me that while the DfT is not penalising the TOCs for cancelling trains, XC (and maybe others) are taking the opportunity to tackle the massive backlog of training that has been building up for the last couple of years. This may seem unwarrantedly harsh on the passengers, but it is an investment in future resilience and efficiency. I personally wouldn't blame the TOCs for taking full advantage of a situation engineered by the DfT.

Oh, and the lack of a RDW agreement certainly doesn't help. It's a bit of a perfect storm, really.

So no obvious end in sight? Cardiff - Nottingham route feels completely abandoned now.

Other services are available.
True, could be worse, but the Voyagers are as busy as ever with many 4 or 5 car sets running around and making the connections into trains to/from the stations not served by the Voyagers adds considerably to the overall journey time and inconvenience.

According to Journeycheck

Cancellations to services between Cardiff Central and Nottingham

Due to a shortage of train drivers between Cardiff Central and Nottingham fewer trains are able to run on all lines.
Impact
Train services running through these stations may be cancelled. Disruption is expected until the end of the day on 08/12/22.

So presumably a normal service will run tomorrow onwards.

Alas no. Still majority of XC trains cancelled Birmingham-Cardiff today 9/12. Not on here to moan - although it is frustrating as someone who at the moment is having to visit QE hospital at University from Chepstow several times a week- more seeking to understand why this route was being hit more than others so something specific beyond overtime bans. But from responses it appears not.

I'm I right in saying that the route is crewed from Bristol & Birmingham or is there a separate depot at Cardiff?

Nope, no Cardiff depot for XC. So it's all Birmingham and Bristol worked.
