While doing the Dundee & Newtyle Railway walks I was disappointed in how little remains, especially of the buildings and equipment such as the Engine Houses etc. The only incline railway that is still much in situe in this regard is the old Cromford & High Peak Railway, which had nine inclines between Cromford and Whaley Bridge in Derbyshire. At Parsley Hay the trail is joined by the Tissington Trail that starts from Ashbourne. This line joined the mainline between Derby and Stafford at Uttoxeter.
Soon after the railway was closed in the mid 60's the route was taken over by Derbyshire CC and turned into the High Peak trail for walkers and cyclists. The engine house at Middleton Top is still in working condition as is the Leawood Pump house on the Cromford Canal. Both are run for demonstration throughout the year. Likewise there is many artifact to be found over the whole 14-16 mile trail.
My two visits were to the 4 miles between High Peak Vistor's Centre to Middleton Top Visitor's Center and was very enjoyable, apart from the weather.
