Caught the 03:25 Sheffield to Mcr Airport last Saturday morning. Wondered about why it would take 1hr46. Thirty odd years ago, Woodhead was still available as a diversion. But what now I thought? Maybe going the usual way but extra time allowed for conflicts with lots of freight traffic? But then, no stop at Stockport booked. Hmmm...very interesting.

I found the 170 on platform 5B. A 185 was stabled on 5A meaning my train was blocked from taking the usual route. Anyway, obviously something to accommodate track work, my educated guess was Barnsley & the Huddersfield line. Wrong! It was the Moorthorpe line then right at Crofton to avoid any need to reverse. Through Wakefield Kirkgate, onward to Huddersfield, where a previously unadvertised stop was made, and then as per usual route to Piccadilly. I made it about 76 miles. And all are claimed for rail miles competition. Along with 152 for a Dublin to Kilkenny round trip when I got to Ireland.

I assume a passenger train negotiating Crofton as described is a rarity? Wonder if anyone got up so early just to take this ride. Especially given such a diversion could only be viable in the Middle of the night.

There were no booked TPE service over that route previously. They only started this year.

They did however use it as a diversionary route one Sunday last year.
