People who commit burglary, shoplifting etc obviously need an outlet or individual to sell their stolen goods to.

If people were not prepared to buy goods "with no questions asked" at much reduced rates surely the market and thus crime rates would reduce.

Are the persons prepared to aquire items in the above manner as guilty as the people who commit the crimes? Would they likely to be the first to complain when burglary rates go up.:p

I'm sure a fairly high percentage of burglaries, thefts and robberies occur for personal use too, not just supply and demand.

We might need Dave to confirm this, but I am sure that the sentencing tariffs (I think that's what they are called) for receiving stolen goods are much stricter than the sentences for theft, and it is viewed as a much more serious crime by courts and CPS

But I believe few "fences" are actually caught compared to the number of burglaries or shoplifts :p

I have heard the company called "Cash Converters" sometimes "jokingly" referred to as a "Burglar's Supermarket"...

Can pick up some good electrical bargains in places like that though. I do wonder who's angle drill I bought there last week belonged to ;)

There was a Facebook page called 'Cash Converters, turning TV's into heroin since 1988'. I think it has been removed now though.

Anyone who watched last nights Secrets of Shoplifters on C4 last night would see that things are indeed being "stolen to order"

No sell on = No or greatly reduced theft:p

In the times in which we live where there are many many people who are financially embarrased, there is more and more temptation from some people in the run up to little Timmy's birthday, to buy the latest games console from a shady looking charictor in a car park for 20 quid, without asking too many questions, there we have one outlet for our thief (Gullible People).
We then have as mentioned above Cash Converters and CEX who will buy expensive electronics with out asking too many questions. I myself sold an xbox 360 to CEX a while ago and all they were concerned about was if it worked, to be fair they did take my name and adress but did'nt ask me to varify it.
As to wether the penalties should be the same for recieving as well as the actual thieving, well it is possable to recive and be unaware, for example if you buy something off ebay at a bargain price or the same with cash converters, you don't tend to ask too many questions you just take the bargain and leg it before they change thier mind or realise thier mistake. It would be unfair for an innocent punter who bought something in good faith (granted it may have been misplaced) to be banged up.
