Just after Stokes was run out, in came Smith who lasted only two balls faced before being bowled by Boland for 0. That meant three so-called International class batsmen, Duckett, Pope and Smith had lasted a total of six balls for no runs.

Matters moved on and at 264-9 in the 67th over, it looked like Australia had regained control, then in came Archer to partner Root in a last wicket unbroken stand of 61 in seven overs that saw England at close of play on 325-9 from 74 overs. Root 135 not out (1 x 6 and 15 x 4) and Archer 32 not out from only 26 balls (2 x 6 and 1 x 4).

Starc once again had a very good bowling return of 19 - 0 - 71 - 6.

Very interesting day of cricket there.

Australia on top thanks to a lot of brainless batting once again, only to then scare themselves for the last wicket about the possibility of facing a couple of overs under the lights and have given up 61 runs so far for the last wicket which has brought the game back towards parity. Will be interesting to see where tomorrow goes.

Root finally gets his century down under though and Mitchell Starc once again carrying the Aussie attack.

Leg 2 of the Stokes and McCullum farewell tour wasn't too bad in the end, but Duckett, Pope and Brook need to take a long look at themselves. Brainless muppets. Unfortunately though, no-one in the selection or management set up will be taking a long look at them, and probably will only encourage them to do the same next time. Which is why this will be their last hurrah.....both as individuals and a management group. This was their best chance to beat an ageing and understrength Australia, and they'll lose 4-1 probably.......and that's the optimistic view.

….although Australia will be bowling third not fourth (assuming no follow on) and the pace of the modern game means that’s likely to be on days 3 and 4 when the wicket won’t have deteriorated that much
