Now back on Terra Firma after weeks listening to just the Shipping Forecast.
Watching England & India dodge the Oval showers.
At Tea India are 3-85.
Incredibly in 29 overs England have conceded 20 extras: 2 No Balls, 15 Wides (in a Test Match!), 0 byes and 3 Leg Byes.

England 109/1 at lunch. Duckett and Crawley hit the fastest ever opening 50 runs in England test history!

It's already been announced that he will take no further part in the match.

Which means England are effectively both a batsman and a bowler short! Which makes one wonder about the fairness of cricket's substitution rules. India (and this is not having a go at them, they did not make the rules) were able to field a replacement wicket keeper, a key position for the fielding team, with someone of equal competence, yet substitutes cannot bat or bowl, so England are a 10-man team for 4 of the 5 days of this Test match.

Yes, it's nonsense. It ised to be that you couldn't have a specialist wicketkeeper as a substitute fielder and that should still be the case if you can't sub a bowler.

Some very poor fielding by England in India's second innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped twice in three overs leaving him 51 not out at the close, might prove costly.

Will Woakes have to do a Pant and come in and bat at no 11 in the 2nd innings if England are 9 down and close to target?

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
India must be pleased when a tail-ender comes in as nightwatchman and then proceeds to score 66 from 94 balls faced in a stand of 107, hitting 12 x 4 in the process.

For all the "pundit media" talk about Bethell, he did not exactly cover himself with glory in this Test Match, scoring 6 from 14 balls faced in the first innings and 5 from 31 balls faced in the second innings.

That being two scoring shots in 31 balls. I'm afraid he looked rather like a rabbit in the headlights.

Anyway, play abandoned due to rain and bad light.

He might well do so, despite supposedly taking no further part in the Test. England need 35 to win with six wickets down, anything can happen!

Well, that he did. Siraj has bowled Atkinson to give India victory by six runs, drawing the series 2-2.

A fair result in terms of the series, in all honesty, but it does go to show just how much work England have to do before the Ashes, despite treating everything like an Ashes warm-up!

Albeit without facing a ball, which is probably just as well as he was clearly in a lot of pain just running.

I think that's a bit harsh. India are currently a better side than Australia, and won this match against a 10 man team. That's not to say that there are not holes in our bowling line up, and a slight worry about some of our catching.

Probably fair for the series, given England won one they should have lost, but still infuriating to lose it from there.

It might be a bit harsh, but I am seriously worried about our bowling. While most of our bowlers look very much good enough when fit, firing, and on song, there is enough of a lack of consistency (as well as some bizarre selections/captaincy at times) that we just don't look ready for Down Under. That being said, the Australian batting line-up seems to be suffering similarly, so we'll see...

Josh Tongue's multiple wides in his first over were even more costly with hindsight.

Though the Woakes injury also tipped the balance, along with England's dropped catches.

Too many factors to pin it on one person or event. All the above, plus Brook getting himself out and Bethel batting like he’d never held a bat before all played a part in England losing

A draw is the right result for the series

Completely agree, watching as a 'neutral' I found it very enjoyable, i'd call it the 'If' Test.
If England had held catches, if England could hit the stumps when going for a run out, if England hadn't conceded so many extras etc etc, i's what makes the game so exciting.
Looking forward to November when the Ashes starts, think England's main problem area is a lack of fit and reliable bowlers, time will tell.

I was wondering if it was physically possible to bat with one arm. How can one get any meaningful power behind shots or in fact do any more than meagrely poke at the ball to stop it hitting the stumps with one arm?
Look up Malcolm Marshall, who did a very good job of it against England for West Indies at Headingley in 1984 - he even scored a boundary! However, I suspect that the nature of Woakes's injury would have made it much more difficult.

Almost impossible. But Woakes would only have needed to block any balls actually faced, with it falling upon Gus Atkinson to score the remaining runs needed, whilst, as much as possible, retaining strike. Unfortunately, things didn't quite pan out as hoped.

Though Gus Atkinson did well at farming the strike. After Tongue's wicket fell, there were 13 balls bowled and 10 runs scored, without Woakes facing a single delivery.
