I would argue he is in the team for his bludgeoning ability rather than his glove work. I know Foakes is the current wunderkind but he plays for Surrey so I am against him. Yorkshire and Durham players are the key.

I would agree that he is in the team for his bludgeoning ability. But every team needs a wicket-keeper, and, as Andy Zaltzman has pointed out, England's key area which requires improvement is the concession of 60 more extras than Australia. Some of this is a reduction in no-balls bowled, but byes are also a problem. A better wicket-keeper would improve the situation.

Personally, I would bring Foakes in to the squad for Lawrence. We'd also have the chance of a Stokes-Foakes-Woakes triumvirate - what's not to like?

(P.S. Doesn't McCullum hold the record for the fastest century? And has Gilbert Jessop's England record been broken yet? (102 off 74 IIRC))

The measure of a keeper should be runs scored minus byes conceded minus runs scored by opponents after they've been dropped / had a missed stumping (unless its an insanely difficult chance)

Bairstow tends to do slightly better than Foakes on the plus side of the ledger but a lot worse on the negative side

Just checked, and Foakes averages 32.20 with the bat against Bairstow's 36.88

Does Foakes offset that by conceding fewer than 4.68 more byes / runs after drops than Bairstow? Yes he does

Agreed: The no balls drive me mad. Unnecessary.

Byes happen, especially with 90mph + bowling but we need to get the numbers down.

It is really difficult squad wise. I might take Ali/A Spinner out and play an extra batsmen to allow both Foakes and Bairstow to play but Stokes wants 4 pacemen and AN Other bowler. Can Root be AN Other bowler?

I still think I would take Bairstow AS LONG AS he explodes with the bat. If he is going to be out for 12 we may as well pick Foakes

Hmmm ?...if you want to mention bludgeon and Bairstow in the same sentence, I suggest you watch his late father, bless him, who was not noted for the finesse of his stroke play...and was an overlooked and excellent keeper as well.

Funny how fickle people are..last year, Bairstow J could do no wrong...this year, summary execution beckons.
