Second Test Match...Day Two

South Africa were all out for 336 in their first innings, after being 309-6 at one time.

Anderson cleared out the tail and finished with figures of 21.2-6-72-5

England at the tea interval were 184-6 in their first innings in reply with all of their first six in the batting order dismissed.

After the tea interval, England slowly moved on to 199-6 then another late batting collapse saw the final four wickets falling and England were all out for 205.

South Africa, in their second innings, lost an early wicket to Anderson, but then consolidated matters to finish at 75-1 at close of play with an overall lead of 205 runs.

Day three of this Test Match should be "interesting".

Lunch taken on day three of the Test Match saw South Africa progressing well with a chance on going through the session without losing a wicket, but they lost two wickets towards the end of the session to go from 151-1 to the lunch score of 160-3.

It was bad enough to have been 122-5, but then to succumb to 133 all out is very poor indeed.

First of all, why pick two spinners at Trent Bridge (I'm being generous in describing Dawson as such, rather than just a slow bowler)? The Times quoted an MCC member at Lords during the first Test, a portly, florid-faced individual: 'If Dawson is a test player, I'm a Brazilian fashion model' and that just about sums it up!

If Balance is to continue, he has to move down to 5 and, I'm afraid, Keaton Jennings has been found wanting, despite that ton in his first test. Whether Stoneman is the solution I have doubts, particularly as he's another left hander, but he seems next in line.

After the euphoria of Lord's, It was decided almost immediately to keep the same "brilliant" team. No consideration of the difference in the wicket, just "let's keep the boys together". The problem with the England side these days is that the players think that they are playing "for the boys in the dressing room" rather than playing for their country. After scoring a fifty or hundred the first thing they do is acknowledge the dressing room rather than the crowd. All this "team spirit" stuff is nonsense, cricket, especially batting, is an individual activity and we need people who play for their own pride rather than "for the boys". The problem with the game these days is that, thanks to central contracts and the ridiculous test schedule, players never get to play for their counties and so we have the close knit test team which, once you've got in and become "one of the boys" it seems is difficult to get out of.

Reflections on the selection of England's test team:-

Three debutants aged 28 or over, the first time since 1948 in the same test.
Surprisingly, Toby Roland-Jones is the first double-barrelled England cricketer since 1935, when 'Mandy' Mitchell-Innes played just one test, against SA as it happens.
Vic Marks reckons Tom Westley is the only Cambridge-born England cricketer other than Jack Hobbs, so huge footsteps to follow in! Hobbs incidentally scored 197 First Class centuries, which far transcends any other player.

Malan got an absolute snorter off Rabada. It was a fast in swinging, dipping, toe crunching yorker - no shame in his ending.

Westley looked decent enough in getting 25. He seemed to be leaving it well but did get straightened up on giving up his wicket.

Root went to a very good catch from De Kock but Cook is still there playing a proper, backs to the walls, defensive test innings. If he can occupy the crease and get some back up from the rest we could still post a decent score.

Day 3 of the Test Match saw the last two South African wickets fall early in the first session and South Africa scored 175 all out, which seemed a long way from being a position of 61-7, with the last three wickets adding 114 runs.
